Hello!

After reading through a few posts here I can see that some of you know a great deal about vises. I am wondering how old, or from what time periode my Record No 6 vise is. If its any help there was a round yellow sticker above the 'Record' that said something about 'oil'.

the cylindrical style spindle (as opposed to the older "meatball" style) may mean it's a later version.....

Thank's for your input exmaxima1.

I did som further reading in another post here where user PCO6 writes:

"I bought my No. 4 new in the mid 70's. It is the only one on which the dynamic jaw has a flat face. The others all have a horizontal ridge cast into the dynamic jaw just above the handle. I know they are all older than my No. 4."

Judging by this my vise is older than the mid 70's. I guess the fact that "Record" seems stamped into the vise rather than relief is significant.

Do you know that despite actually owning those catalogues, having photographed them and then browsed them many times I had never noticed that whilst the majority of the vices had the meatball/teardrop/etc style boss on the main screw up until the late 60's the mechanics ones do not.
Thank you for pointing that out to me! :)

It does indeed seem like that the stamp may be the year ...... I'm off to inspect the underside of my No 00 now.

Thanks again :D

I don't think it looks like a 1, but I'm not sure.

Here are the stamps on the nut for the No. 6:

and the No. 2
