I said “appears” because the second pic the OP posted is as close as he comes to showing the tailpiece on the sink. I’d lay very long odds that’s an 1-1/2” flanged tailpiece attached to the bottom of that strainer, but who knows, it appears to be leaking so it could be something differentAppears and actually has are 2 different things. The drain/strainer threads are standard even on now non standard strainers so seeing a pvc threaded tail piece on doesn't confirm a (modern) standard hole.
This is pvc connected to a 1939 strainer.
1/4" isn't a lot but it and the angle of the contour meant a 4.5" od only touched on the outer edge. The original strainer was 5" od.

5” flange strainers aren't uncommon, but the ones I’ve used (restaurant eqt) are still 3-1/2” dia body.
