How should a high-efficiency furnace be vented?

Hello - I'm installing a used high-efficiency furnace in my garage... using PVC for the inlet and vent. I'm looking for specific requirements on where the venting can occur... i.e. How close/far away should the vent be to a ventilated soffit? How close/far away must they be on an inside corner of the garage & house?

I'm not finding any local codes / examples for Minnesota - furnace documents offer general ones - hoping someone here can provide input/feedback/recommendations.

Many thanks - Scott

This information would be supplied by the manufacturer, local code would say "installed to manufacturers specifications". Google the make and model and the install manual should provide that information.

i just bought a new 2 stage high effiecency ICP (comfort maker) furnace and the manual that came with it is full of information on venting.
search the model serial number for the manual or call the manufacturer and they should be able to provide you with one.
even if you google 636 IPEX venting system there is a manual they have on standard instal practice.

Hi dfiler2... My document states the following: Clearance in accordance with local installation codes and the requirements of the gas supplier and the manufacturer's Installation Instructions. So nothing specific is listed even within my furnace's manual... so the reason for my initial question.

My furnace is a Trane furnace - 60,000 BTU, 92% efficient
M# TUX060C936C3

Still looking for recommendations...

Ours was done to local codes...but had them come out and put the Inlet and exhaust higher after last years snow amounts as I did not want to have to shovel them out this year.

I'd want them above the average snow fall.

You should call your local inspection/permit office. They can tell you what codes you fall under.

Those specific questions are addressed in the installation manual, and have been for years. They are based upon the NFPA National Fuel Gas Code.

Your local municipality may have tougher/additional requirements.

Do you have a picture of the install and a picture of the interior/exterior of the wall you want to vent it through?
Id definitely try not to vent it out the north side, but pictures would help.;)

Thanks for everyone's input - FINALLY found a Trane Rep to send me an Installer's Guide... and it show's what is possible. Minimum distance to an overhang is 12"... Rep confirmed the information as well. Don't plan to be that close, but it allows me a fair amount a space now to run to intake and vent.

Thanks again for everyone's feedback and input! :)
