How thin is acceptable

When my shop was built their was a small alcove (6X12) that originally was meant for a shop compressor and water pump. It was poured about 6" thick with wire mesh and about 2" lower than the garage floor. The original thinking was that if their was a leak in the pump instead of flooding the garage it would stay in this lower area and drain out the back wall through a drain hole.

We are now on town water and have moved the compressor to an outbuilding. This area now has a fridge and freezer with access to the backyard through a new door.

What I would like to do is pour a 2" coat on top so as to not have that drop. Their will be no heavy stuff except the fridge/freezer and foot traffic for the door. Would this work? Being that it is such a small quantity I will most likely need to mix it myself. Any tips to make it last

I'm not a concrete pro, but I would think this would be too thin. Maybe some pros will chime in on this one.

Good luck!

Use the strongest bagged material you can get. Make sure it has fiber in it and anchor mesh (steel grid) to the old slab. If the traffic is light this should be fine and dandy.

2" is probably the absolute limit for concrete. So if it's less than 2" you may have to look at an epoxy mortar/patch or polymer modified mix.

OK, I can use the mesh again. I am going to the Depot later this week and will see what they have in bags. It is always heated if that makes a difference

Check out Home Depot they have a product called Rapid Set Concrete Mix that says it can be poured as thin as 2". They also have additives from the same company that can increase the strength of the mix. This is a very fast setting mix though.

Never thought of the wood idea, it does lead out to a wood deck so that might work nicely. Is the rapid set the same one as is used for posts. If so that stuff is wicked fast in set up time. Not sure I can move that fast anymore!
