Do you guys have any ideas on how to add an outlet in a finished garage. I know how to wire up the receptacle, but the closest outlet is around the corner about 6 studs away. I have no problem doing minor sheet rock cutting. Should I surface wire it (kinda ugly-not preferred)? The existing outlets are stud mounted (like in the house). So how would I start the wiring from the in wall to the surface wall receptacle. Thanks in advance!:shocking:

Does it have a baseboard?
If so, pull off the baseboard, drop down in the stud where the outlet is. Do what you need to do to go 6 studs over with the wire and put the baseboard back on.

Be careful nailing the baseboard back!!
Using nail plates over where the wire path is would be the code required thing to do.

Otherwise you pretty much only have the 2 options you originally said- Cut sheetrock OR surface raceway. Unless you can go up and over like Gooch is thinking about.

Look for "old work boxes". You do not need to nial it to a stud.

What kind of sheathing do you have outside? soffitt? Might be able to bust into the attic area that way.

The "baseboard" is actually a long piece of wood that is recessed from the sheetrock wall. Maybe I can pry that back. I have attic access, but wouldn't I have to run wire through the room above the garage and then down to the garage?

drill the top plate above the outlet, and drill a hole above the space you want to add an outlet, then fish the wires in the wall. you might need to 'remove' the current box to fish the space.
