Hi All, thanks for reading my post.

I recently acquired a drill press but it doesn't have a vice.

I want to get one but the drill press doesn't have slots or holes on the platform to install a vice... could anyone advise how to make it happen?!

Many thanks,

Liz

I don’t bolt the vise down. I drilled and tapped a hole in the table to accept an eye bolt which I use to trap the hold down slot in the vise. The eye allows installing and removing the bolt without tools. A hex nut can be left threaded on the eyebolt to clamp the vise on one side if needed. If you bolt the vise down, how are you planning to align your work to drill a hole? The table can be swung right and left along with swiveling the vise to align what you need.

Hi, thanks for your quick response!

This question about alignment if you do fix the vice down was another one I had!

I haven't used one of these drills before and will be using it to primarily drill holes into wood only.

I don't suppose you have a picture of your set up so I can understand what you're describing? I assume this would work with these kind of vices (pictured)?

Thank you!

Thank you very much. Are any of the vices in my picture above ok for this method?

I have a x/y vise on the big WT that weighs about 100#. It's bolted down. On the little drill press, I just grab hold of the vise handle to keep it from spinning. This let's me move it around for multiple holes without having to loosen/tighten the vise.

Do not use spare bits in a drill press, can lead to problems if you feed too fast. People do it but I have seen them snap or bend and bind the workpiece and whip it around. Forstner bits are your friend.

I have a set up like two posts up and that works pretty well for most of my needs.

I have an 8” Cardinal SpeedVise on the smooth production table on my Delta. I haven’t had a need to bolt it down yet. The lead screw is long enough to hold to prevent it from spinning, and the weight of the vise is enough that it takes care of itself.
