Stuff like that was really expensive back in the day, same for air comps. Many are not much more in todays dollars. 900$ was different in 74, as was pointed out that 22t is about that now and hard to beat.

I was headed down the road to build one. Once I added up costs of pumps, hoses, spool valve, steel, etc it was cheaper for me to buy one from TSC

I built my own but I had the engine, hydraulic lines, wheels and all the steel already on hand. Final cost was under a thousand $. I bought a pump and valve on sale, then when I went to purchase the cylinder, for a bit more money, I bought a kit that contained cylinder, pump and valve. So I now have some spares. The advantage to DIY is that you can build exactly what you want, so I built a large out-feed table and a log lift that can also act as a side table. This makes handling large pieces a breeze. I often put several blocks on the lift (1 large and 5 or 6 smaller pieces) and split them all in one go. Also the beam height is comfortably high for me. Since the photo below, I have done some tweaks and modifications and still have more to do.

Here's the one I built a couple of years ago. Works great. I'll try to post the pic.

I bought an instruction book on how to build a log splitter in the early 90's. I never got around to it. I picked up a sweet hydraulic cylinder with a lot I bought at auction and was trying to figure out something to make with it. Ended up hauling it to scrapper during one of my parts and pieces purge. If I can locate the book I'll send you a PM for your address and mail it to you.

I have built a couple of splitters and have another in the works.

You can't compete against a store bought on price, you have to be a scrounger and want something that is either a higher end splitter $4000 or up or want something that isn't made.

I wanted electric, no gas, no smoke, less noise and the reliability of flipping a switch.
Wanted it tall, the wood rolls off the truck bed right onto the splitter, no bending over.
And I wanted to be able to roll it through a 3ft wide door.

Mine is 4.5x28" stroke, with a 5hp electric mtr, that is about equal to 12.5hp gas.
Got most everything but the pump, hoses, fittings and valve from the scrapyard for 10-30 cents a pound. Including the ram and electric motor.
Dunno, I have $300-500 in it??

I have used it a few years now and it works really well, and always starts.

FREE LOG ARCH PLANS

Well once you have pasted together a log splitter, you may find the need for a log arch, or a donkey to get your logs out of the woods. Here are some free log arch plans for fabricating a log arch

Redneck suicide wheel, an old and trusted design.....to kill you. That is one scary video. Actually there is a commercial splitter line made by DR that uses a heavy flywheel rather than a hydraulic pump but the splitter is not on the wheel. The flywheel has a pinion gear next to it and there is rack gear with the splitter on the end. The rack is not always engaged. You push the rack into the pinion and the rack shoots forward driving the wedge. At the end of travel the rack disengages from the pinion and a spring pulls it back for another shot. There is no waiting on the pump so it is fast and everything is covered up by guards. Anybody here have one?
