How to check fluid level on Sears 326.12002 jack?

After 49 years of faithful service, my classic Sears 325-12002 jack has started to bleed pressure. I went to check the fluid level and I grasped the rubber plug with some pliers and tried to twist it and pull it out. I didn't come easy and I was afraid I'd tear the old rubber so I let off.

Is there a trick to getting one of these out? It's in a tough place to access and pry.

No trick, Just pull. If you break one, you’ll find a fill plug replacement on Amazon.

Its likely the u-cup seal and you're in for a rebuild. Unless its sitting in a puddle of hydraulic oil.
