How to clean/maintain an anvil

I've got an old anvil with the normal surface rust, but in good shape.

I figure i can wire brush the rust off , but is there any good way to treat it so it doesn't just rust again immediatly?

Put some metal polish compound or paste lube.

Wipe it down with oil. You can always hit the top with a belt sander and then cover the top with an oil soaked rag. I used to clean and oil mine regularly, I"ve gotten lazy in my old age and figure that it hasn't rusted away since 1899 (Hay-Budden, I can date it from the serial number) it isn't going to rust away in the piddly fifteen to twenty years I'll have it.

Use it! Used tools dont rust.
