I picked up a Kennedy 520 chest today.

A bit rusty but serviceable.

The felt were shot and needs to be replaced.

What should I use to dissolve the adhesive so I can cleanly remove the felt?

After that will put clean felt or cork to line the draws.

I plan to remove some of the rust, degrease and put a clearcoat.

What do you guys think?

I picked up a Kennedy 520 yesterday and am considering cork drawer liners as well. A steam cleaner might make light work of the adhesive.

That 3m adhesive remover works well. I paid about $20 for a jug and it seems like it will last forever.

I'm in the same boat as the OP and thanks for the tips. Also, my latches and lock need help, and I didn't see anything on the Kennedy website about replacements for their older (30 years+) 520 and other boxes. Are there good places to look for these items?

Oh, and the paint on mine needs some help. How do you get the crinkle look that Kennedy does, is there a trick to it after you spray?

I redid the felt on a 1950s Craftsman machinist. It was not the original felt so it was easy to pull out. I tried acetone to clean the draws of the glue, but I could tell it was going to harm the paint. So I switched to lacquer thinner. Used a China bristle paint brush.

As for larryg, I would like to see a picture of your lock. I have replaced the lock on a 520 but it was not an old version - standard cam lock. Older boxes had a hasp lock. I contacted Kennedy about a key for a hasp lock and they no longer have them. I don't have a Kennedy old enough to have a hasp lock, but my 1950s Craftsman has the same lock Kennedy used in the olden days. Lock made by Excelisor.
