Hi everyone -

I just uploaded a quick how-to video showing how easy it is to convert Inch-lbs & Foot-lbs.

A lot of people wouldnt realize how simple this is to do, and I show you a quick and simple way to convert torque specs between the two.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

Here is the video ---> www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYeRdZ2wjw8

Thanks!

Ya learn sumthin' new every day. I didn't know there are a lot of people smart enough to want to apply a given torque who don't know there are 12 inches in a foot.

Live and learn.

Duh! I think I was taught how to convert feet to inches in 3rd grade. This is not rocket science.

I did not make this to teach people 12 inches are in a foot. I made it to help them understand that it is easy to convert between the two...I dont think everyone understands that the two torque measurements are interchangeable.

Teaching people that there are twelve inches to a foot is the only real way to do it. Without comprehension and understanding of why they're "interchangeable", (that's quite misleading, but I'll go with it), you might as well teach a monkey to press keys and call it typing.

Not intending to take the piss, btw, (any attempt at helping others should be encouraged, not derided :)), but just saying that people need to understand why, not just be told that something is. Only briefly glanced at the video btw, so not sure if you already tried to drum the basics in or not?

Haha! I thought that too!
If they didn't know 12"=1' they shouldn't be touching any tools.

Then I asked a few "Brainiacs" ,guess what?

Over here they only know the metric system

This must be a joke. What's next? Converting gallons to quarts? Cents to dollars?

As easy as it it to take the piss, one does also have to remember that there are people out there who are lacking in either knowledge or basic math skillls. Same as some people can't spell for toffee, some people literally can't total 2+2.

If what you say is true, then why would any one of the poorly-educated know-nothings you cite have an interest in practicing any skilled trade?

How to videos are YouTube's single greatest contribution to society IMO.

Is this video groundbreaking to most of the members here? Certainly not, but there are tons of people out there that don't have a foggy ******* clue how to convert in./lbs. To ft./lbs.

I see no need for everyone to be an ******* because the information in the video is beneath their skill set.

Agreed. A couple years ago I bought a new computer for my entertainment center (a Mac Mini) and added RAM myself b/c it was cheaper than buying the one that came stock with more RAM. I youtubed it.

Now my little brothers on the other hand, are sitting there like, "How don't you know how to add RAM?" As I say, "How do you not know how to cut compound angles on jack rafters?" lol. crawl before you walk.

Most everyone probably wanted nothing more than to have been skilled tradesman I'd bet. But life gets in the way, ya know?

I'm sure a lot of them poorly-educated know-nothing's were drafted and fighting in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam while the high school/college kid learned how to convert inches-to-feet in a classroom.

There's a zillion reasons to not get an education.

There's no excuse not to provide in some way for a family.

I have a sweet conversion App on my Iphone. It was free. Don't remember the name of it but it has a green background with a ruler and calculator in white.

I still scratch my head when I try to remember ounces to a quart and sometimes have to double check myself when thinking about pints.

Some have the gift of memory .... some of us don't.

The first time I had to use an inch pound torque wrench I went through the same issue as the OP ...... I ended up going with "snug".

My wife would hit me with a rolled up newspaper when I asked her a dumb question. Now I keep the computer bolted down.

Here's the paradox of the situation, and the reason this particular mentality of "it's so obvious" poses great danger within our larger society.

If those with the knowledge only shared with others with an equal or greater amount of knowledge, we would eventually emerge as a bimodally-distributed (at least, and simplified for the sake of example) society consisting of witless twits and super geniuses. At some point in the not-so-distant future, the innumerable witless twits would revolt and resort to the tactics to which they're privileged. I don't need to detail how that plays out.

As a society, we have a duty - an obligation really - to assist those who don't comprehend more advanced theory, logic and knowledge. Combined with the sharing of experience and sprinkled with a modicum of good judgement, wisdom is passed from generation to generation.

I was going somewhere with that -- ah yes. Mathematics? So, as simple as it may be for many people here to magnanimously dictate that it should be obvious to anyone that 12" are contained within a foot, there's always going to be someone else who could just as easily denigrate the same person who doesn't understand advanced thermodynamic theory, etc.

So, to the OP, even if it is something relatively simple for almost everyone here, I wholeheartedly applaud the fact that he/she reached across the bimodal divide and helped one more person get a grip on such a concept.

It is unfortunately a fact that more than half of people in the USA reach adulthood without a basic understanding of ounces, pints, quarts, gallons, inches, feet, etc.
Since this country is so backwards as to have avoided joining the rest of the world (except Myanmar?") in adopting the metric system, we should at least educate our children in the systems we do use.

Last week, I went to the nursery and bought five trees to plant in my yard.
Two are 15 gallon size, and three are 5 gallon size.

Along with new trees, the nursery sells rooting and feeding formulas to use in planting them. The nurseryman told me "we'll get you the right amount of each for your trees, and have it ready when you check out.
They sold me a quart of root stimulator. I got home, and opened the pamphlet that this very nursery produces and provides with their trees and products, and it says to use 3-1/2 cups for a 15 gallon tree, and 2 cups for a 5 gallon tree.
Now, right away it was pretty apparent to me that that adds up to a lot more than the four cups that are in a quart.
You would think that they might get this right, since they more make money selling more products.

Liquid ounces and ounces of weight confuse many. That was one stupid unit of measurement. Take that one to the third grader and ask him to explain it.

So how many inch ounces (NT WT OZ) are there in 1 inch pound?

Quickly, all you smarties! ;):D

If you need to do the conversion, you're probably outside the accurate range of your torque wrench. Go back to the toolbox and get the right wrench.

1 in-lbf = 16 in-ozf

Could be worse. Speedometers in furlongs per hour?

Yeah, but what if I'm torquing 24K gold bolts? Do I have to convert to Troy ounces? Is there even a concept of Troy ouncesf? Can someone make a video for me in case that happens? (smile)

Haha I can figure that out through comprehensive metallurgical analysis.

Send me all your 24K hardware, on "good faith" of course...

Not sure about those units, but if anyone did make a video, they probably would be wise to obscure the brand name of the tool for fear of opening another can of worms. :)
