I think the reinspect only comes into play when it is DOT for transport. Storage I think is more lax.

Yeah, there aren't any other tags or stamps on the tanks. There is an area that may be a painted-over sticker. So I think I can reasonably assume that 25 years between inspections/certification is the minimum.

I guess I need to call the propane suppliers. There is a brand new tank on craigslist in the area for $800, but that seems to be a lot to me. I don't see anything used near me.

There is a guy on the Harrisburg, PA craigslist selling a 2007 100 gallon tank for $600. Says he paid $850 installed. I think that $800 is about right for a new tank. Considering that last more than 25 years and can be had for under $200, I don't think I'd ever buy a new one.

Will companies like Suburban and Amerigas fill used propane tanks that you buy off of Craigslist? Normally you don't get a receipt so won't they be reluctant to fill it since its difficult to prove that you own it?? When I talked to Suburban they wanted proof of ownership unless they were just pulling my chain...

Seems really expensive to me.
Last I knew around here you could get used tanks for around $1/gallon, $500 for a used 500 gallon tank, or about $2/gallon for a new tank.

Yes, 500 gallons, which used to be fairly common, but now we mostly see 1000 gallon tanks. You should hear people cry when they have to fill them babies at $2+/gallon.:(:(

They weren't kidding. So draw up a Bill of Sale and have the seller sign it. That is proof of ownership. It is a good idea to make sure the tank doesn't have "Property of Xxxxx Propane" stamped on it. :)

Probably the difference between low-density, everybody-has-tanks Iowa and high-density, tanks-not-so-common East Coast. :dunno:
