How to degrease an old wood workbench top?

Here's a late update to an old thread. A few months ago, I finally broke down and busted out the plane.

While the top looks like nice butcherblock, there are strips of fairly soft wood in there and the overall effect was... just okay. After scrubbing it with the plane, I hit it with an orbital sander and called it good enough!

Looks like it has some character now.

That's how my old garage floor was before I poured over it. I could actually use a putty knife to scrape the built up grime off the floor.

Tthink you will find that they only way to get the oil off is to remove some wood. You can try scraping .. I would use a plane. You may have to rather deep -- how thick is it?

My find it better to cover with masonite and use the wood for weight
