How to do a half-timbered/Tudor facade right?

Hey guys,

I posted over at finehomebuilding.com (link to post), but haven't had any luck yet, so figured that it couldn't hurt to post here as well.

Here is what I'm trying to emulate:

I've looked at using PVC instead of 1x4 wood for the framing pieces, but it more than triples the cost, so painted wood it is.

So far my research indicates this is the order of materials:

1. Framing
2. Sheathing
3. Building wrap
4. Furring strips
5. Metal lath
6. Stucco layers
7. Frame pieces

Sketchup mock-up of what it might look like:

Application of the stucco I've seen before and after the 'frame' pieces are installed, so that's where I'm uncertain.

More importantly, I'm wondering if I can avoid stucco altogether and just do a textured white paint instead. The real key here is it must provide good drainage for water. The last job was made of fibreboard with 1/8" coat of stucco and wood - completely rotten for the bottom 10" or so.

Anyone ever run across a job like this?

Oh yeah, and an update as of today: :bounce:

I have a tudor style house. Mine has some type of molded siding that looks like masonry. My house was built in 1974.

We went around w/ planning & building dept on ours. Not exactly a tudor style but it does have timbers in stucco. Here's what we had to do. Install shear panel for backing. Install 2 layers of 30 lb roof felt where wood would be- extending out a minimum of 6". On top sides of timbers, had to use a custom Z metal that was under the stucco paper by 3", depth of timber & a 1/2" overlap on face of timber. On bottoms- had to use a metal stucco stop. City didn't want stucco in contact with the wood. In the end- we eliminated all the timbers except the rough sawn around garage door but still had to do that the way I described.

StephenW: Masonry-esque siding eh...that's not a bad idea. I'll check into that.

Steves32: That sounds like the right way to do it. It also sounds like a LOT of work for something I don't want to put a lot of work into. Thank you very much for the clarification, though!

Nice! HardiePanel comes in stucco! Now to find a supplier here in the GTA...

Edit: Supposedly Home Depot and Lowe's stock HardiePanel. I'll call them at lunch and find out.

Edit: HD can get it special order only @$45 per 4x8 sheet! Hm. That's kinda pricey, but might be worth the saved time of (learning how to stucco/frame up lath, apply stucco, etc). It's too bad that the 1x4 PVC trim is so expensive as well (about 8x price of 1x4 wood).

Thanks for the input, guys.
