How to do metal cladding around garage door openings?

Before I can get the stucco/stone done on my shop, I need to clad the overhead door openings in aluminum cladding.

I have all the material on hand. The only problem is, I have no idea how to do it!

My only concerns are the upper corners of the joints and how to make them overlap and look correct and hidden. Door openings are 10hx12w.

Thanks in advance.

I wish I knew what letter this stuff is designated as. It covers the 3 sides of the door box opening.

It's like a J trim but provides a nailing surface on the wall. Clear as mud?

OK here is how I did it. There are a couple spots that could have been a little better but all and all it turned out pretty good.

Start out with the sides, if they are long enough to do the whole sides, that is a good thing.

I used the top pieces to do the corners as well so at least 1 side is solid.

If you are stuccoing you should not need the J-trim (the piece against the trim you are using) but with siding it gives a more finished look.

The J trim allows you a little slack but with stucco you should be able to but it up tight.

I had to have a splice in the middle of the top ensure overlap and caulk the seam inside the overlap.

ensure every where there is a seam you have overlap and caulk everywhere the water could run in sideways. if the seem is horizontal it is not as much a concern.

Run caulking behind the base of the flashing (where it meet the concrete) before you install the flashing and then a small bead after the flashing is installed.

Did you cut/bend a section of the vertical piece to end up on the horizontal edge of the top of the door header?

Ok, I think I've got it! I'll use your pictures as a template and get to it in the morning.

The pieces I have are 10ft, so I'll end up having to do some overlapping both on the horizontals and verticals. Did you put drip channel across the top when done?

I ordered a custom 14 + foot drip flashing today so I have no seam and I can give extra protection to the seam in the door flashing.

Should be in next week.

Good info, I didn't know you could order this stuff custom or I would have got it all the right length to begin with.

I also noticed you went on top of the building wrap, should this not be mounted to the wood directly with the wrap on top?

Looks like you got your metal answer. But it should go under the paper, that's what provides the water shed. The best way for me to describe it is wrap it like you would a window.

I have the wrap tied to the vapor barrier so that will not work. The only place I have the wrap over the top is for the base flashing at the concrete. If the water gets in behind the tape I am SOL.

It could be one area that is not quite the right way, I am not quite sure.

I was outside and I am thinking I might have done the top over the flashing. I did the man doors. I will have to check the next time I have the ladder in the front of the shop

The documentation with my windows says to put the housewrap over the top of the drip flashing so that's how I intend on doing it. I also used Blueskin around the windows and over the man door. I'm going to use it over the top of the overheads because I overbought and have a ton left over. LOL

Thanks guys. I got it all buttoned up last night just as the mosquitos decided to invade. It sure is nice not to see Typar flapping in the breeze anymore!
