How To Drywall Around Garage Door Track?

My garage was originally unfinished, the overhead door was mounted to the studs. Now I am insulating and finishing the interior. Do you need to remove the garage door & track to drywall it correctly? And if so then what just reattach the track directly over the drywall? I feel over time that might cause the drywall to crumble but maybe I am wrong.

I am also debating getting a new garage door with upper windows to allow more light in so maybe that would be the time to hang up drywall if they need to pull the old door/track off?

Before the days of internet to ask anybody I just cut out the sheet around the brackets. Then I used durabond to patch the holes level. The door did rub on the sheetrock edge. On the garage I built I used wide trim inside and the door tracks mount to them. You might be able to replace just the one door panel or cut and install windows if the door is still good. Jim

If you remove the track brackets and put drywall behind them you're going to be moving the door inwards by 1/2", creating a gap between the door and seal.

My garage door guy advised me to install 2x4’s for the tracks prior to the drywall so there would be no drywall between the tracks and the framing. He said he had seen too many installations where the drywall deteriorated behind the brackets making the tracks loose. Many (almost 30) years ago, when I built our attached garage, the doors were installed to the framing before the drywall guys did their work, and they just worked around the tracks. Same with my daughter’s garage.

I wouldn’t remove the tracks to drywall, especially if they are working well.

I'm in the same boat with my garage build. Once I was weather tight I had the doors installed as soon as I could, as I had a lot of tools (many borrowed) inside.

Now I just finished insulating the ceiling and have 3/4 of the rock up. I was fortunate in that the panel seems fell only a couple inches beyond the L-brackets for the track, so I simple marked and cut a 1.5" by ~3" notch in edge of the rock. Then 4' over, I had to cut notches again for the L-brackets supporting the door opener.

I thought about re-mounting the door brackets to wood blocks, but these cutouts should be pretty easy to fill I just went with it as is.

I'm considering myself lucky.
