I need to extend a Harbor freight pole saw by 3-5’ to reach a branch.

I’m cutting a tree branch by standing in a 3rd floor window and reaching out.

I’ll have another pair of hands helping me.

Any tips?

Safety first.
My thought, make a triangular base out of dimensional lumber to vertically support a 30’ ft extension ladder. Place it 6’ to 8’ outside the window. This will be your support for the pole saw shaft. Next fix an extension six feet onto the pole, 2x2 or pipe, three wraps of duck tape should be plenty. With the saw unplugged at the source, lock the switch on, position it and have a helper plug it in:thumbup:
My wife says she would hold your feet instead. Please forward your life insurance policy w/ her as beneficiary.

Clamp or zip tie a wood or PVC extension to the pole, zip tie the trigger down and have your helper plug it in when ready to cut.

This definitely sounds like a "hold my beer..." scenario. Be sure to video it for the survivors' (and GJ members) entertainment.

I do like the idea of a longer pole, with a counterweight on it, to offset the cantilevered pole saw head.

You can easily lash a pole or rod to it.
If finances permit longer poles are available in two or three piece extensions and telescopic options.

I’m going with this. Maybe some ratchet straps on the pvc extension and pole cutter.

Buddy plugs it in and then holds the middle of the pvc pipe while I hold the front and guild the pole cutter.

If it works will save me the clams 400 the tree cutting service wants.

Thanks

Just make a little cut on the underside of the branch first. This way when you finish cutting from the top it won't tear the bark off as the branch falls to the ground. It make a cleaner cut that will also help with you jot getting pinched.

It won't tear off the bark, but it won't bend allowing the branch to come closer to the ground in a more controlled manner and to fall closely below the cut either. Depending on the situation below the limb one style may suite a particular situation better than another. Branches suspended in the air don't pinch the saw like branches resting or horizontal cuts.

She’s ready to go tomorrow morning.

Might switch to a 2” pvc pipe as this 12’ stud is a bit heavy

Dont forget to zip tie the trigger on, and use the plug as the on/off switch.

Haha. Yeah I’m going to wear a harness strapped to a stud.

Hire a professional. Better for you trees health and your safety.

I had a couple uncomfortable moments trimming branches on my pine trees from a ladder or my roof with a similar pole saw a year or so ago. My neighbor told me the following day that he’d hired a pro the previous year who did all his trees for $200. WTF was I doing on that roof over $200?

Done. Took about 20 minutes. Definitely should have put an additional counterweight on the back end of the 2x4x 12.

Maybe a bucket of compound.
