How to fix a porch leak....

I was sitting on my porch a week ago, enjoying a rain storm. I then looked up and noticed that the bricks along one side of the porch were damp from the rain and I could tell where the water was running down along the wall. A day or so later, I got up to the roof and noticed that the seal is slightly dry rotted (for lack of a better term). There is about a 4-6" black, presumably tar-based, seal (looks like the underside of a shingle) around the porch roof that appears to have a bead of something black covering its edges. This seal stands vertical against the bricks.

A friend of mine told me that they sell tar caulk or the like. However, is this the route I need to take or should I consult a roofer for this job?

where the brick and roofing meet i.e. 4-6" above the roof this should be flashing to help prevent water fom getting under the shingles, not sure where you live so some applications. are different but they due sell a chaulking to seal this type of juncture with the roofing and exterior surface of your home . if the flashing is actually a tar paper or shingle material you may need to replace it as it can become dry and brittle with exposure .in the northeast it would be a metal flashing that would be tucked into a cut groove in the brick face and sealed.

So, just rip it out, replace it, and reseal it? I wasn't sure if it somehow tied into the shingles or was just a barrier on top.

Oh, and I'm in NC.
