How to heat 18 wheeler trailers?

I work at a distribution center. The building is heated, but the 7 plus trailers that we load daily are not. I was thinking about buying a forced air propane or kerosene heater. but most of them are listed as OUTDOOR use.

we have those at all 14 dock doors. But it would cost a fortune to mount a heater to each. I was thinking something more portable that could be moved to the door that is being loaded.

The guy that loads the trailers spends about an hour in each. I just think it would be much more comfortable doing so if it wasn't frigid cold.

Well, I like the way you are looking to improve the conditions for your workers. A happy comfortable worker is a productive worker.

I think if you took your original idea of the heater from lowes and put it on a small rolling cart, that would do the trick.

How is the warehouse heated? Possible to have a duct added to the building system blowing into the trailers?

Might want to check your insurance before firing up a salamander.

When i worked in a warehouse, the insurance types were VERY picky about stuff like that (propane storage, flammable storage, smoking etc)

Anyways,,, how cold does it get there we could only dream about a little heat in the warehouse proper, let alone the trailers

If the warehouse is heated, I would use a semi large fan to blow warm air into the trailers. Nice and easy to move if it has wheels, and the heater already installed it doing the work

Really are they loading using a forklift or a pallet jack or loading a pallet by hand then loading each pallet by hand? The reason I ask is here lately at work I've been unloading minibulk bags of soybeans and corn on pallets and it only takes about twenty five to thirty five minutes to unload 20 pallets out of a 53' trailer. Forty five minutes, if you include unlocking and opening the two overhead doors and one walkin door and then closing and locking all the above on the warehouse that is across the road from our main warehouse and office complex.

we used a propane heater on wheels made for just that can be used in moving trailor ,but must be load locked down . these heaters have a 2x 2.5 pad that get very hot .they call them flameless but dont want things too close .kind of like those round heaters you mount to single propane tank only bigger.also put an old piece of rug down under dock plate.

The warehouse had gas heaters hanging from the rafters at 30'.

We are self insured. We have already had several single digit days / nights.

I like this idea... use a portable fan to force warm air from the warehouse in to the trailer. Not sure how affective it will be. The trailers arrive during the night and we open them at 9AM. They are like an ice box.

using a forklift. Our orders are picked, then combined then stretch wrapped, and loaded on the trailers. One trailer / route at a time. Avg. 7 trailers a day 25 to 27 pallets per trailer.
