I'd like to be able to hold something the size of a screwdriver handle or hammer head in my drill press and tool sharpener.

Is there some kind of adapter that can fit in my chuck that can hold larger diameter things?

I guess you would then turn on the drill press? Sounds like a very dangerous idea.
If you need to drill a hole in a LARGE item you need some kind of fixture to hold said large item. And then move the drill bit towards the item. Sort of a milling or horizontal boring operation.
What is it that you are trying to do?

No, all I really want to be able to do is hold old ball peen hammer heads in the drill press so I can clean them up, and I have this tool sharpener:

That I would like to be able to use to grind screwdriver tips or sharpen chisels without having to figure out how to remove the handles. The chuck in the sharpener does not spin, if just holds the tool and moves it against the grinder.

Replace the existing chuck with a 4 jaw chuck, assuming both have the same MT. But remember your drill press probably won't like lateral loads, as it will thrash the bearings, or disengage the MT.
