Hey, need some help on how to insulate my roof. This is a pole barn building that originally had a steel roof and now has sheathing and shingles. The walls just have 1" foam board then the steel but nothing for the ceiling roof. In the winter when out there I lose all my heat as soon as I turn off the heater, so is it worth nailing foam board to the bottom of the purlins or r13 rolls then foam board? Or will that cause any problems with ventilation and moisture on the bottom of the osb? I'm trying to insulate the roof line and not add a ceiling to keep height in the shop.

I have had success with double bubble foil backed insulation. I did a retrofit and put the double bubble over the purlins leaving an air gap from the bottom of the roofing material and leaving the ridge vent open. It helps with keeping in the heat in winter and keeping out the heat in summer and no more condensation drips.

If you Google EcoFoil or TechFoil or double bubble insulation there are some PDF files that illustrate the application.

Is there a difference between this bubble foil insulation and foil faced foam board?

The double bubble is just like packing bubbles and is much easier to apply and it can also be placed under any kind of wall board or ceiling boards you may want to use. For the walls of my pole barn I used it over the girts and then put CDX over it. On my ceiling I just put it over the purlins and did not cover it, just left the white side visible.

Id foam board it if you have the cash. It will be better than bubble but more money. Instead of nesting it between purlins nail it over them. This will leave a 3.5in gap behind the foam. This will increase the r value. Also buy the tape and tape the seams and edges. I used 2in foam board. We also did this on a friends barn he blew in insulation after we got the foam up. We cut 2in holes in the foam to pump the insulation in the cavity behind the foam. It worked well. Im considering doing it to mine.
