How to make my entryway gate keypad "Smart"

I have been working on this never ever ending entryway gate... long story very long I remade the gate twice because I found a really cool self closing hinge that has crazy specs on the gap between posts and gate and also the thickness of the wall of the steel tube... but because I didn't want to worry about the kids leaving the gate open and letting the dogs out I remade it... I have the Locinox keypad which is wired to open the gate by controlling the power on and off to the magnetic lock. Then there is an exit button on the inside of the courtyard to let you open the gate… it is complete overkill and if I could do it again I would have used a standard handle with digital lock…

Anyways my question is: They don’t have a wifi smart phone app that is plug and play with their Locinox keypad. So you are entering the code every time you go in… I have been researching relays and I think I can wire a relay into "the override" to remotely turn power on and off the magnet to work in conjunction with the keypad…. has anyone ever done this and can give any guidance or suggestion on a wifi relay that would be pretty dummy proof for me to wire in?

Thanks!

Ramsey

We've had the Remootio for a little over a year and it has brought a measure of automation to our 24-year-old analog gate controller. The system was easy to install and has operated flawlessly. The software is simple and easy to use. It's great to finally be able to control gate operation remotely from anywhere in the world.

Sounds like you need the remote app to simulate pressing the let me out button. Or are you really wanting to tie directly into the keypad?

That’s great feedback…thanks!
looks like I should just buy it and see if it will work. I wish they listed the Locinox slimstone-2 keypad as compatible on their site….
Still seems like the best plug and hopefully play option.
Some of the other ones out there are less expensive but then your are paying an annual fee to use the app.

I think so? The keypad doubles as the computer all in one… so I think trying to wire it to the other override (exit button) then it “should” kill power to the magnet to open the gate… if not maybe just splice it into the exit button…
I also found this exit button that has a built
In wifi feature that would work but the exit button isn’t water proof for outdoors and doesn’t have any reviews so not sure the longevity of it.

Their customer support is excellent; I would recommend reaching out to them before you buy to confirm that the Locinox is compatible with their product.

Good luck!

A Shelly Plus or a Zwave switch should do what you want. Shelly is the all in one way to go and it will be about $30 all in with no monthly fees.

Are you looking for bluetooth credentials or offsite controls?
Ring makes a gate controller and you could look at linear

Note mucking around with a security system is a risky game. The designers of the systems seem to go out of their way to make things complicated in an effort to make the system harder to bypass.

A word of caution the magnet that keeps the gate closed store a huge amount of energy when energized in the form of a magnetic field. When anything breaks the circuit the magnetic field collapse 100% of the energy is returned back to the coil. With the circuit being open the energy must become thousands of volts if they did not give it a place to go with a diode. Generally, it is best to put the diode close to the coil but If in this case the diode is in the key pad things could get ugly fast.

I would not be surprised if the coils has a soft start built into the keypad and the switch you are thinking of adding could mess with that circuit.

Been emailing with them and unfortunately they can’t confirm that it will work…

I would use an electric strike instead.
Yeah unfortunately everything is all fabricated and powder coated and installed… been looking at a few strikes that I might be able to swap in place of the magnet without too much cutting and welding and doing sections of touch up paint but would have been 1000% easier on the bench. Maybe on the next version.

There is a bunch of these Shelly plus to pick from… I’m going to have to dig into which one works for this application but the price out is worth a shot. Thanks for sharing.

Old thread, but... did you figure out something that would work for you?

I'm interested in your solution because I'll be installing a gate keypad and would like to integrate WiFi into it. Right now I'm using a remote app that might work for you -- it uses relays to trigger the "open" circuit on the gate controller. But my controls are a little rough around the edges and yours sounds a bit more integrated.
