well i f@cked up! i bought a new 16x8 garage door with a high lift kit. it's set up for 11' to the bottom of the horizontal track. what i really need is 10'. can i just chop off 1' from the bottom of the vertical and add it to the horizontal? there is a short piece of track that goes between the vertical and the curved piece. maybe modify that piece?

Maybe...

Depends on manufacturer - if its a full door kit, often they'll be generous with extra (sometimes 18"+) for field modifying.

Do realize your cable length will probably need to change - chances are you're using 400-54 drums - Measure floot to shaft center - add 63" then deduct highlift (Floor - Centerline horizontal track - 96" in your case) That'll be your total length - you may need to talk to a local door company to either modify or replace yours - don't just grab a set of ferrules and hammer/vicegrip/butcher a set into working; if you don't have proper swaggers - get them built/modified correctly.

problem resolved! we were able to cut 8" off the intermediate (high lift) piece. and 8" off the cables. everything works great.
