how to read caliper

Hello,

I just bought this Brown& Sharpe #570 Vernier caliper for a working on my car. I just want to make sure that you read this like other calipers. Or does the other part that has the adjusting screw figure into reading it? Also, anyone know the rough age it this?

The purpose of the fine adjustment clamp and screw is to make fine adjustment easier.

It is read the same way as any vernier caliper.

I use a few like that.

Loosen both screws and close on the object to be measured. Tighten the screw attached to smaller sliding element and rotate the knurled knob so that the jaws contact the object. Read the scale to the nearest 25-thousandths. Look at the vernier (sometimes a magnifier is useful) and identify the lines that are in alignment. Add the vernier value to the earlier reading. Done.

Hard to tell what the age is. Recognize that an inside measurement is made using the opposite side.

Thanks guys. I thought that I had it right but wanted to make sure. I sure is nice and well built. I won't be using it near enough but it will come in handy every so often.
