I'm doing some craft-like projects with some old, cheapy wrenches.
I don't want the chrome look on them.

I've had some luck with heating them, letting them cool, then running them on the wire wheel.

Any easier / better way to do this?

Leave them set in white vinegar for a couple of days. Nice and safe to use.

Didn't think about that.

I used some rusty corrugated tin in my offices for accent. Didn't want the screws to be shiny so: dunk in muriatic acid, submerge in vinegar, rinse with water = instant weathered look.

IIRC the longer they were in the vinegar the darker they got.

I have never had a reason to do it, but
I have heard that hooking up the plating/de-rusting electrics backwards will de-plate.
