How to remove drill press top bearing

I have an older Walker Turner drill press and while everything is functioning perfectly, I'd like to lubricate the bearings. On the top, as pictured (not my drill press) you can see an oiler cup and then a screw and nut on each side of the shaft. I removed the nuts and turned out the screws exactly 2 turns each and the bearing wouldn't budge. Should I remove the screws all the way out, or will I get a bright flash of light, then a cracking whip sound followed by 300flying spring tensioned ball bearings? Or, should I just leave things alone and just oil it, and if so..... how much and how often?
