How to replace vintage Wilton vise jaws?

Hello all,

I have a Wilton Shop King vise that I bought years ago from a pawnshop. It opens to approx 6 1/2". I love this vise, except that the jaws don't close all the way (see first photo) and I don't know how to replace them. (The closing mechanism itself works fine ... the jaws, however, are too thin.)

As you'll see from the second photo, the existing jaws appear to have been mounted in non-original fashion. They are held in place by a central fastener that is ... I don't know what. It does not appear to be a stripped-out phillips or hex bolt. The other two visible fittings on the jaws are alignment pins ... they do not actually hold the jaws in place.

The jaws themselves are approx 4" wide, 5/8" deep and 5/16" thick (which is not thick enough).

Any suggestions on how to get them off? And if I do, any suggestions on economical replacements? Wilton no longer sells replacement jaws for this model (shame on them).

It looks like it might just be a pin. Try removing the 2 other screws and tapping the jaws out with a punch.

You're going to find what a search of the many previous threads on the same subject will show. It usually costs more to replace the Wilton jaws than you paid for the vise. Yours is a very light duty version, so the cost/benefit of paying for new jaws is even less. However, if you are handy and patient, making new jaws yourself is not really that difficult, just time consuming.

Looks to me like the movable jaw is hitting at the bottom and keeping the jaws apart. Should be just a few strokes with a ******* file to get clearance for the jaws to close. Those jaws would work fine for most of the work I do. File to get the jaw closing and don't try to find inserts.
