How to Roll Out Roofing Shingles

Hello, new to this board, love what I read and have learned lots so far.

Here's my project at this time. My shop roof leaks, I could wait till spring but it leaks only in areas I work in; also I seem inable to successfully tarp it

I have to replace 6 sheets of plywood and have purchase 6 rolls(100sq/ft each ) of 90lb roofing to cover about 400sq. I can return a roll or overlap generously. I also purchased 3 gallons of that cold roofing glue to glue down the overlap and edges.

Any tips or caveats before I start this for the first time? I don't wanna have to do this again.

Could I use an 18ga air stapler in lieu of nails? I doubt it but it would be easier and I have a box of 5000

Wear cloths you plan on thowing away. I did the roll roofing twice when I was a roofer, before I new it I was covered in that glue. We always used nails but I've tore off a lot of roofs with staples, they seem to hold fine, but it seems a few building inspecters outlawed em.

Being the fically responsible person I am, I would try to use the staples. But if you do I think they need to be fairly wide...meaning the distance between the legs needs to be fairly large. If you can imagine the amount of surface area the head of a galvanized roofing nail covers...try to have the staple cover the same...It's been years but I installed a wood shake roof with a roofing stapler and I think we used 1 1/4 inch staples...might have been over kill on the shakes though, I believe those staples were designed for asphalt...

It never hurts to overlap the runs generously, this will give you more area under the overlap to staple. In that case you could get by with a "narrower" staple and use more of them. Too much overlap though and the wind could cause problems, there's a happy medium there somewhere.

Heed the advice on the old clothes and long pants/long sleeves. I slopped some roofing tar on my hairy legs trying to remove that was less than pleasurable..

Oh thanks, first chuckle I've had today. I had to sister 10 joists due to dry rot, Tripled one where a car's engine would be below I rented a 3" nailer and WOW that'll take 6 hours off my job and 6 years off my arm. I'm laying down my plywood this afternoon and hoping to roll it out before dark; 4 hours away. Thanks for the tip about the stapler. The staples aren't that wide across the top but I'll use lots and thinking of stapling one on top the other like an "X". I can't think of how I'd hand nail roofing nails quickly without hitting my fingers till they bleed. I work with computers for a living, my cars as a hobby and my house cause I own it I'll hire out only if I no I can't do it, like rebuilding an C4 ****** or removing, replacing and rewiring my main breaker box
