I have tried almost everything with little success. Our termites are more discerning and will not eat tree stumps. Their food of choice seems to be freshly installed 2 x 4's.

Years ago a landscaper told my Dad (rip) to put lots of grass clippings on stumps to rot them.
It did seem to work well./QUOTE]

You need to get the grass clippings to start decomposition. Add ammonia on top of the clippings.

Decomposing grass can stink !

Stump grinder is definitely the fastest without question. I know you said you can't burn it, but my buddy has been burning stumps for a few weeks in an area where I didn't think he could. He has a 50 gallon drum that he cut the bottom out of and puts that over the stump that is burning to keep it contained.

I cut down some trees when I moved in 10 years ago. By this spring, most of them had rotted enough I could either break them up with an old axe, or cut a few roots and pull them out easily. Two were a bit of a pain. One had many, many horizontal roots that I cut with a Sawzall and a pruning blade, the other ended up staying in the ground cut just-below ground level with the chainsaw.

I tried drilling holes and pouring the quick rot stuff in two of them years ago, and they were two of the more difficult ones to get rid of this year. Not worth the money or time for that stuff.

On a couple palm tree stumps we needed gone but didn't want to pay for it. we chopped them all over with an axe. Then some gas and a fire on them. Did that for a couple weeks every night until it was down below ground level and then we poured concrete to make our driveway wider. Worked like a charm and was fun/cheap.
