Credit cards are a tool. If you can't be trusted with one don't blame the plastic. I go through probably 5 grand or more in charges for business and personal stuff monthly and never ever do anything except pay the entire balance when it's due. I have one card for eveything I spend that is a reimbursable work expense..hotels, meals, rental cars, airfares and I can go online and get a complete list every time a fill out a report to know I didn't misplace or forget something. The credit card companies work for me. They keep my records, give me interst free loans and save me from walking around with a wallet full of cash and pockets full of change. I'd be an idiot to miss out on all the cash back, rewards and convenience they offer.

I do find it odd that people get pissed about not getting it or getting hassled about it. HD and Lowes are private businesses that have absolutely no obligation whatsoever to give that discount. I've saved thousands using it and just feel fortunate that it is offered. Ever try getting a military discount at other stores? Not going to happen in most cases.

Exactly. Military discounts are given by companies as a way of saying thank you. They're a privilege, not a right. It was reward enough for me to just have served in the military. I keep remembering a man coming through the Walmart checkout line last Veterans Day. He was whining that how dare Walmart not give him a discount for his service. If I hadn't needed the job, I would've told him to STFU and stop acting like Walmart owed him anything. I was embarrassed that someone from the military was conducting themselves in this manner. Anyways, nobody here is acting like that, but I just wanted to say that it is a little selfish to expect that a private company give you a discount for having served. You don't see policemen or firemen complaining about it, even though they're usually left out.

Just some food for thought.

At the first of this year I got one of the spark business cards that earns 2% cash back on any purchase. Been using it for inventory purchases for my shop. Will have enough for a very nice vacation very shorty.

Pay it off in full every week.

Lowes & hd changed rules last year. 10% year round. Va id must state service connected. Active duty & retired also accepted. manager approval required. Usually can't be combined with other discounts YMMV. I bought a 48" husqvarna mower 2 years ago for cost by stacking military and 20% off coupon.

It depends on how hard they look at it I think. I've been told the discount is only for people with a VA Card that is labeled with Service connected on it like mine is. If you just have the standard VA card, then it may not apply. That could be complete bunk also but I know that Lowe's will look the card over very carefully while Home Depot just glances at it. I was told at my local Lowe's that they were having a huge problem with people giving/getting the discount and now require a manager to approve each transaction like that.

One can't really be an active member of the world without a credit card.

Bad, or no, credit severely limits a person's options in life. If you never had a credit card, life get's much more complicated than it needs to be.

Jim

You should talk to my mother... refuses to use credit or debit cards or a cell phone. She's almost 72 years old. Me? Im the polar opposite... How she got anywhere in life is beyond me. Oh btw.. she also refuses to drive on a highway. I dont get it either.

Im with everybody else.. use credit cards to your advantage and pay them off every month. Ive hit my limit with cards. Ive got 9 and was rejected about 2 years ago for another one due "too many revolving accounts." :willy_nil

You spend more money when you buy on credit vs buying with cash. The logic to it is, everyone spends more money when it's not physically their own cash in hand. That's why stores push credit so much, it's causes people to spend more than had planned to.

This is probably true, but there is one very easy solution: self control

Not necessarily. If I have cash, it's usually gone within a few days. Doesn't matter how much I got. If I've got a card, I'm good with purchases because I think "Do I really want to pull out a card for an $0.84 purchase?"
