how to start a build???

I am in the process on looking to upgrade homes and everything that i am looking at has a three car attached and a little room to build a seperate structure like 1 1/2 wide by 2 cars deep. The question is how to i go about finding out if I am able to build on the property?

Go to the towns zoning and ask about the zoning requirements. Set backs, size,height and other restrictions this will be different from town to town.

Have your real estate agent do the leg work for you. Have them provide the rules to you in writing, learn them and then follow up on your own with the planning/building department that is in charge of issuing building permits. I would be very clear with your RE agent what your needs are. They should know, but confirm independantly.

i am not thinking it will be a problem since other homes on the street have seperate garages/structures but just want to make sure before spending some cash.

Double check though. We looked at house a couple years ago with the same thoughts in mind. Didn't appear to be a problem as a couple of the neigbors had large pole buildings or garages.
However, after the neighbors built their structures they had been deemed "too big" and some serious restrictions got written into the city rules.
I probably could have gotten around it, but didn't take the chance.

Don't trust what others have done. Rules and regulations change constantly and anyone with a pre-existing structure is grandfathered in.
