Went to use my tools the other day and found that almost all of them have started to pit, does anyone know how this can be prevented other than leave a coating of wd40 or the like on them between uses, I do live in a coastal area but want these tools to last forever

WD40 is very temporary, and of course you need to wipe it off and then replace it to actually use the tools.
I protect tools that are starting to rust and tools that are unplated with Butcher's floor wax...smear it on thick, let it dry, wipe a bit. Very durable, not bothered by use, and not slimy to handle.
