Do you have them just in a box or are you using those stand with a lots of holes in it?

Bits are a problem to store because everyone has several of each size. I must have 6 1/4" bits. I would need 6 holders but, than all holes would not be filled. I'm thinking of making my own by drilling holes in a block of plastic or aliuminum than I can have several holes grouped together for my same size bits. I like them better when they are standing up so you can see the sizes.

These are nice but can be expensive. These allow you to store more then one bit per slot so multiple bits aren't a problem. Bottom of the page.

I keep all of my bits in a drawer in the roll around work center. Most of them are in indexes though except for the ones I use all the time.

I have my set of bits, then I have small plastic bags with extras. I buy mostly chicago latrobe bits around here, and I get these little plastic bags that they are packaged in. I store extra #drills in one, Letters in another, sizes in another... YOu get the idea.

A magnetic strip holder works well, on a wall, if you are primarily drilling wood and plastic. You find them for holding knives, etc. I think I've seen them at Lowes'. I suspect if you are drilling mostly metal, this might magnetize your bits and cause them to hold onto steel shavings.

Thansk for all tips. I am noticing that you have much more tools/holders in USA....here in Sweden I haven´t seen any of those except the first one....

In my last place of work we only used four sizes

All on alloy and they were classed as consumable so readily available from stores as and when you needed them

I preferred to keep a couple with me at all times, so just pushed them into the foam on my kit

I have them in drill bit cases/boxes
each set is for specific uses
one for use only in collets
one for general used with the mill and lathe
a couple that are general used with any drill

these are stored in seperate drawers and seperate toolboxes so they do not get mixed up
loose/spare bits are stored in dividers and rubber banded or bagged together

large bits are laid out in order in the machine box
morse taper buts are in a seperate drawer in the machine box

I store them in cases or pouches if they come with them. New ones stay in packages until needed and the rest go in a zip lock bag inside my corded drill case.

I have a set of drill bits on the way from England and I think they come in a case.

This works pretty well for me. I've got several of each size. Spent some quality time one day with my Drill Doctor. Now, whenever I need a bit, I go here and I've got a freshly sharpened drill bit.

Right now, large bins. Later this week, smaller bins. This is only loose bits, of course, I keep sets in their original indexes.

I started out just tacking my old drill indexes on the garage wall over the bench (pic#1) but added a few of the larger sets with number and letter sizes drills which I keep in a drawer in a roller cabinet (pic#2). The wood case in the bottom of the drawer is 1" - 9/16" step drills. Misc. bits are in the cardboard boxes on top of the wood box. Then I scored my drill press at an estate sale and with it scored the drill carousel (pics 3 -6). It was home made and pulls up to the front of the drill press easily but folds back against the wall effortlessly and quickly right out of the way. I'll include shots of the 2 arms and the mount bracket so you can maybe build one yourself if you like. You don't need the orange plastic piece really.

I said I was a drill bit nut!

Prior to this organization, I had drill bits all over the shop in pill bottles, envelopes, baggies, cut-off gatorade bottles, you name it.

I can now find a sharp bit when I need it. When I dull one, I usually throw it in the trash and grab a new one. It's cheaper to buy new ones than to spend the time to sharpen most of them.

A Drill Doctor would sharpen those dull drill bits in no time. I have one and would be willing to take all those nasty dull drill bits off your hands. ;)

For my "daily" use drill bits I use the "Bit Keeper" by BAC Industries.

I keep a 115 piece drill set in cobalt for the more "special" projects.
