How to turn off animated smilies?

Is there a global option to turn off the animated smilies? Every time the animation cycles, my browser hangs for a second or two, and the browser CPU usage goes to about 100 percent.

I note there is an option to turn off smilies when I'm posting, but I want to turn them off everywhere.

I don't have this problem on any other website, so I don't think the problem is because my browser is lame.

I'm using Firefox 3.6.3 on Ubuntu Lucid.

once the page loads just hit the "esc" key and they will stop.

Assuming Firefox has a built in way of blocking.

Edit: Seems Firefox doesn't have a built in blocker (I use Opera, and it does). http://adblockplus.org/en/ is a plug-in that should do the trick, though.
