I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe that the bearing shield is used to protect the user from flying debris should the bearing race shatter. Bearing races are made of hardened steel so they are extremely brittle and will shatter if pressed improperly.

I have a neighbor that hit a bearing on a manure spreader shaft and a piece broke off and perforated his intestine in 7 places. It's still in there.

So I would set it over the bearing when I am pressing it in? I Googled it. Nothing really comes up, people must not use them?

Hello. Place over the bearing prior to pressing. Please note that industry, OSHA enforced, requires a shield in place in front of operator prior to using the press. Yes it is a major PIA to use, BUT it will intercept or at least bleed off energy before projectiles strike human flesh.

Not for sure but that's what it seems to me. You,place the shield, over the bearing in case the breaking shatters when pressing it on

I guess I have been doing it wrong all these years. I always stood behind a newbe employee when I was pressing a bearing on... I guess I misunderstood the bearing shield concept

More or less, the hydraulic presses which are common today, have little to no "feel" for what is going on during the press-event. If one has a mechanical arbor press, there's force-feedback thru your hands as to "something's not right". Whereas a hydraulic press will march merrily on until the pressure regulator relieves the max line pressure. It does not take a lot of dimensional incorrectness to induce problems. .0005" per 1" of diameter is the rough guideline. Its challenging for a machinist to hit a .0005" dimension to start with, and in developing a production-machining process it doesn't take much tool wear either to get the hole size too small. Either problem can blow up the outer race.

Not to sound insulting, but I'm finding it hard to understand why people are having a problem visualizing the use of a bearing shield...
