Yea, sounds pretty moronic to just about everyone reading this on GJ. But over the years working with my kids (adult now) and their friends and even my friends and neighbors, I have come to the conclusion that over half the population doesn't even know which end of a screwdriver to hold. :lol_hitti

My youngest is almost 21, just started an automotive class at tech and has learned a lot in the past few years working in the driveway. But on occasion I have had to bite my tongue and not be the smartass that is buried deep inside me and correct him on using a tool correctly, or show him better options that make perfect sense to me.
Example, he's trying to pull an exhaust manifold off because its in the way of putting a wrench on the bell housing bolt. "Son, socket and extension... leave the manifold alone"

That being said, there are a lot of off the wall tools that even the average guy would look at funny, or not realize even exist. Hell, I fought buying ratcheting box end wrenches with a flex head until one day I saw a bolt I needed to remove and realized one would be perfect. Went and bought a set, and I was hooked like on crack. Had to have them all. Does any of the tool companies put out videos showing the best use for some of the unusual tools and even basic ways to use what is common? I'd love to pass them on to the family and friends.

Companies don't make how to videos because their target market of consumers already know how to use them. It would be a great idea though, kind of like how to videos on youtube for people trying to fix their own cars.

There are tons of videos about undoing and reading the box art..

But those really help no one. As far as using tools goes even in the shop we occasionally find vids of watching some guy do the same job. Why he usually has a southern accent eludes me.

But as far as proper tool use all I ever seen was a copy of an old gov publication from the war years. One for soldiers and another farm related.

There is a reason we make so many cheap tools in the world. There are a lot of furless monkeys out there misusing and wrecking them almost as fast.

The more he wrenches, the most he'll start getting the intuition.
Experience and mentoring. There is no substitute.

Hands on experience is the only way to really learn. The best way to learn is from your own mistakes. Not sure about you guys, but I can read something 15 times and not understand. Show me how or let me do it once and I will never forget. Example - when I was in trade school for plumbing. Screw the books, give me some tools and some pipe. Probably learned more in the first month I was in the field than all the time in school.

There was a member on this board that was doing that kind of video on weekly basis. I remember one where he showed how to use a rivet fan.

Otherwise Youtube is literally full of that type of video.
