How to wire this heater?

I am installing an overhead electric heater in my garage. I have a pigtail with red, black, white and bare wires. I am not sure where the connections are made in the heater itself. Red to red? Black to black? White to the open ground screw next to the green wire? Where would the bare wire go?

That heater has no need for a neutral.

If the wire in the pigtail is big enough for the heater you can just remove the white wire.

what model heater is it?

it most likely doesnt need the white wire (neutral/grounded conductor) so red to red and black to black. bare goes to ground screw

I dont see a green wire in the mc pig-tail

What is that flex from? The white wire should be the neutral, and you won't need it. The bare will go to the screw right underneath the green wire in the heater. Black and red will go to the lugs that are marked L1 and L2 have black and red already coming off of them. What is the wattage of the heater and the size of the wire? I roughed in for a 5000 watt heater a couple of months ago. When I went back to install it, the owner was very proud of himself because he go a helluva deal on a 10,000 watt unit. He was pretty dissapointed when I wouldn't install it. He wound up trading it for a 5000 watt. ( He didn't need a heater at all, it was in a 24X24X9 room that's inside of a 120X80 heated building).

That flex looks to me like it came off of a range or cooktop. I wonder what size the wire is?

EDIT: I meant built in oven or cooktop.

yeah i forgot to mention that. the conductors have ring terminals on them so most likely from a cooktop. might be too small for a range. definitely not what came with the heater since it doesnt need ring terminals

Yeah, that pigtail is left over from the old oven from our kitchen remodel so I thought I could use it here.

Here are the specs on the heater itself. I can go get different wiring if req'd. I am having a 100A subpanel added to the garage this week, which will feed this heater, among other things.

You are right - no green, just the white wire. I got confused somewhere between my garage and the computer.

The wire size is #12 stranded, so I don't think it's heavy enough for the 24 amps listed on the heater.

@ 6000w you need 31.25a rated wire.....

its 25a @ 6Kw so yeah #12 is too small. you need #10THWN or #8 NM-b

I do have several feet of red and black #8THNN wire available. I could get a #8 bare wire for the ground and use those three wires in my flex? Or should I just let the electricians deal with all of it this week?

#8 is a bit overkill but if you got it sure. you dont need #8 for the EGC. It can be #10 but must be green jacketed
