How would 1 person assemble a 4 post lift?

Most of my friends live out of the area, and I am getting in 2 weeks a 4 post lift. I am not quite sure how to get the unit off of a trailer, and how to lug the ramps around. I do more minor repairs / tinkering so I do not have any hoists / engine lifts. Does anyone have some suggestions? or am I SOL.

I would love to hold a "lift party" but not too sure if I would get any takers.

You could always rent an engine hoist...

Or just re-route the lift to me and I'll take good care of it!

Where are you in NJ? I might give it a try.

Take off each post and place it on a heavy duty dolly (like the ones pictured in my garage thread). The platform is another story. Probably need a bunch of guy for that. Does the platform come in pieces?

I am up in West Orange...you prob know my brother who is big in BMWCCA. He tracks up at LR and The Glen with his M3's prob with 3 or 4 local chapters. I think the posts will not be the big issue, nor the cross bar. I think the 2 ramps will be the issue, esp around 500-600lbs, yet you only lift 1 end up at a time and attach to the cross bar. Yet the 2 posts with the cross bar attached may be a bit heavy to rotate upwards.

I need to see where I could rent one...I also need to rent a small movable scaffold to do the ceiling wiring / painting.

Lift party would include food and beverage...maybe I could get a few takers...

This is the way we get our heavy jobs done in WV. We've done two 4-post lifts this way with good results!

1. Buy beer
2. Order pizza
3. Invite 3 or 4 friends/neighbors
4. Do heavy lifting
5. Enjoy pizza and beer

Be sure to complete step #4 BEFORE step #5.
Good luck with your project!

Jim...that is the way I would prefer...I would even crank up the BBQ...yet many of them (esp my brother) would have to eat before they would move.

Time, ingenuity, and patience and one person can assemble any two or four post lift. I set up five four-post lifts using a cherry picker by myself last year. Though it was far less effort and time to install my Mohawk two-post lift using the bridge crane in that shop area.

Definitely keep the beer away from them until you are finished. And let people have just one slice of pizza until the work is done... :)

Although, I have seen this sort of thing backfire where the group is anxious to get to the "reward" and ends up hurrying too much and f***ing things up... :(

TY....where did you pick the unit up from with the engine lift? Did you take each piece off the trailer or as 1 unit? Did you use a chain or a strap, and where did you "grab" onto? Did you just go around the unit or grab into a hole or such. I have never used an engine hoist before to do something like this. If you could spend a few min on the phone...PM me

To get it off the truck ... use the redneck way ...

GUN IT & GO !!!! ... it will come off the truck !!!

OK back on topic, go out and buy or rent an engine lift. For a couple hundred bucks, you will be able to get a decent lift that will do everything it needs to do ... then you can always sell the engine lift after your done.
