The door open switch for the interior light.
I want to keep it pressed down while I work on the car with the door open.
How would you keep it down?

Why not just switch the dome light to off? You can also remove the screw which will break the circuit.

My take:
Switch the interior light to "OFF".
Most cars have a three position switch in the lamp unit.
Off
Door jamb switch on
Steady on

Ok, let's just say in theory this wasn't a door switch.
Now how would you clamp it down? Duct tape was one idea.

Large spring clamp or large clothes pin. You don't want a lot of tension or the switch could break. I have seen spcial clamps in the tool catalogs. I believe they are called "sanity clamps" so you don't go insane listening to the door chime.

one time use or common issue?

I have some 1 1/2" circle magnets in a metal can with 1/4-20 threads coming off of them (I have no idea what I salvaged them off a long time ago.) I would simply bolt a small piece of flat stock between 2 of these and use them to hold the switch down.

If you are using this to troubleshoot the door switch circuit, you could make a bracket that attaches over the door switch using the same screw (or screw hole) that holds it in place. When you tighten the screw, your home-made bracket will press down on the door switch button.

Take out the one screw holding the switch to the door jamb, thats its ground. Better yet, sell your tools and find a new hobby.

i would do the magnet and bar thing.

friends dad had a diy metal clip that fit on his own cars doorjamb and pressed the button down. basically a wedge. (the switch was in the hinge side).

but: remove the ground, fuse or bulb is the normal easy method. if thats too much hassle just plug in battery trickle charger to keep battery charged.

ps.. whaddayamean "say in theory this wasn't a door switch."
