How would you set up my garage?

I have a somewhat unique garage setup. I have a window on the right side, and a staircase down to the basement. I am struggling to come up with a good layout. Should I close off the stairs? I have 1 gladiator cabinet but Was thinking of getting all newage setup. But the window makes it hard to put overhear cabinets. I also have a 44" us general toolbox I bought that I would like to incorporate as a base of a bench.

Any advice would be appreciated.1a71532f0017bfe3ceab97a96fa659a2.jpg5939586df4f365ed09b922dae42818ce.jpg4f8c9f1c93a00e54be822b059de4168c.jpg5b18e72d785cfbcbc9a7b879bd06330e.jpg

No way I would ever close off an egress to the outside for the sake of safety. You never know when or where a fire will start or where an intruder will confront you in your home. Preserve your options for the safety of everyone in the home.

That said, I agree with bri_man, put the bench under the window, it is plenty high enough to still allow you to hang the essentials like screwdrivers, channel locks, etc right above the work surface.

I wouldn’t close off the stairs, but there is some dead space that you could be creative with above head height as you go down... a set of stepped shelves or deep sliding shelves with vertical doors, each one one step higher to maintain headroom.

Agree the bench under the window provides great natural light. Seems like you have plenty of room along that wall.

Agree........Garage stairs to the basement huge asset, benefit, sales feature especially if you have another shop area in the basement for let’s say woodworking.

Consider some open shelves in front of the windows. with stuff stored up there you will still get some filtered light in the area. Might be a great place to store the RC cars.

Work bench goes under the window, no exceptions :)
I'd build one of of 2x4, 6, 10's etc & 4x6's for the legs.

8ft long, static vise on one end, swivel on the other. Bench top to be either 3x10's or 3 2x12's deep (or a mix of 10's & 12's). Topped with 1/2in ply & 1/4in masonite.

silver cab stays, black cab goes in corner where the ladder is, span between them with your workbench. add hanging cabs between window and tall cabinets at ends.
Leave the stairs alone.

My parents have a set of basement stairs in the back of their garage as well. The unfortunate part is takes up about 4 feet of the 24' depth.

Several years ago after not using the space for a few decades. I suggested he build a floor over part of it for some storage. Not the entire thing but where there's ample head room. He came up some table, possibly from work that sits over the stairway.

There's no loss in head room and the table top sits about 40" off the floor. Sadly it has become a site for a catch all. However, cleaned up, it makes a great storage space. Personally, I'd build a floor over part of it and get a place for the two wall units you have.

Workbench under the windows.

Put walls up around the staircase, door at the top of the stairs. Takes away from the openness but gives you room to put cupboards, shelves or wall decor up.

Workbench I would put where the shoe rack is now with a 44” HF box underneath with that top and bottom right in the corner. Split the cupboards up to be one in each corner.

Nuttsgt and phantom's answers together give you a lot of cubic foot of storage cabinets. Just maintain headroom as the stairs descend and build full depth cabinets / cubbies that span from the railing to the front wall of the garage, over the stairs. With the above mentioned wall along the stairwell.
