Think of what you are trying to fit in there, then make enough room for a bench in front and at least enough room to walk all around it with the door closed. Width depends on how much stuff you have or if you plan on multiple large projects. I have a 32' deep by 60' wide. I really wish it was 40 feet deep.

I was considering about 42 feet wide and 50 or 60 feet length as I want put large two post lift in and large work space to keep all multiple toolboxes together and workbench.

I am plan to put a orange poles to see where I would like to put it on.

Also I am wonder if I am build that large size- how much it would cause property taxes to increase?

I would contact the town and find out that, it will not be as much as a house, but it could be significant depending on what the tax rate is and how it is calculated.

If I were you, I would go as big as you think you would need, 42 by 60 is a nice size. Height is another thing to consider, if you are all ready planning on a couple of lifts you could go 14 or taller. Then you can add areas with mezzanines so you have essentially a second floor. Do not show that in the plans you submit, they may want to charge you more in taxes.

I did contact my local county (Morgan county, Indiana), they said not limit what size but make sure it is not build close to property line like 25 frets away from small road, 5 feet off the side of both property. 25 feet away from backyard where is property line.

I live on almost 2 acres. I already had 1400 sq feet house, 34x40 garage, and large shed. I did asked county if can I build a large garage, they said yes.

I has seen one house as small trailer home with like 50 feet wide and 80 or 100 feet length.

$100 sf I think is kinda high but your tax expectations are a good guide. My shop is 40x60 and I feel is about the correct size for me. The county appraised it at about $30k. I have just over $60k in it and it's pretty nice.

For judging what will work for you visit as many shops that you can that are set up for auto work and ask the size. Pictures here on GJ will also help.

Exactly, You would hate to be unhappy with the size after you get started. Think about where the future might take you as well and try to plan ahead. As most always say, " the bigger the better" or " you will always want bigger"

plan accordingly, research your options and tax rates before you get started

I asked mechanic friend of mine about how big of a tool box I should get and he said as big as your budget will allow. The same holds true for the garage you plan.

I also wonder about heating costs where you are. If it gets big, can you put in an internal wall to divide it in two and just heat the part you use most?

Was house shopping a few years ago and saw a house with a very large garage, I'm guessing 40 x 80, and it had a bigass wood burning boiler that sent heat via underground pipe to the house, which took care of both buildings.

I am only 30 feet 6 inches deep inside measurement. Wish I would have went wider also so I could have four vehicles one in front of the other with my 16 foot door. But the greedy tax man already rapes me as it is. Hope to build on some day.

I know when I move to Montana next spring and build my shop, it will be built in such a way that I will be able to extend on the gable ends when more money is available.

So, I can turn it from a 40x80 into a 40x100 then 40x120 on and on....(example)

Maybe think of something like that. That way you can add on later etc.
