I came across this site a few times doing google searches for different things shop-related... decided it's definetely time to join!

Born and raised on a 300+ acre farm - grew up having 'barn shops' - nothing fancy just a place where work got done. Just bought first home year and a half ago - came with a 30x40 former horse barn. The loft was finished with pine boards and laminate flooring, nice open room with high ceilings - I installed a bathroom - currently used as a jam room... plans for a kithenette/bar in the works. The main floor had a few little rooms from prior owner - I gutted all the interior walls so all that's left is the posts. Currently working on downstairs bathroom - doing the finishing touches. The shop is not just a workshop but also the main entertainment area and the main meeting area for most of our friends/neighbours...

Anyways, that's my short shop-story... cheers!

Cinch: all that space sounds awesome. welcome to our group and post up some pictures of your barn if you have any because at GJ it's practically a
"golden rule" that you need to post pictures and a lot of pictures if you are describing a garage, barn or tools.

ask a lot of questions if you need help with pictures or on threads if you did a little research and didn't find your answer. of course there are some questions that one answer isn't good enough, but as you have found out there is quite a bit of information on a lot of these threads.

cheers and just an FYI there are a lot of great members from Ontario on this forum.

Cinch: nice pictures. looks like a park. just a warning that a lot of members will be trying to talk you into turning that awesome loft room with all that shiny wood into a man cave.

again welcome and when you are reading some of the short or long threads post up some of your thoughts. either a question that didn't get asked or answering one and post pictures when you can.

looks like you might need some steel beams to move some supports in the lower level, but in any case i wish i had that much space both inside and outside your shop/barn.

I just noticed your last picture and see that you have a nice big Record or Paramo vise sitting on that nice workbench. or what is that vice?

Thanks... The loft will be a man cave eventually.. lol... I have the cabinets etc for the bar already.. just need to install them.. need to finish downstairs bathroom first tho... man cave is next! Ya, I've been thinking of the posts in first level - the good thing about them is I've had 30+ people dancing and carrying on in the loft and the floor is solid as can be... lol ... They aren't as bad as it looks to work around - it's more open than the pic suggests... but I would like to investigate removing them nonetheless... probably a big undertaking to do properly and support the loft - so it's lower on the priority list for now... ;-)

Cinch: doesn't sound like an emergency, but as you know or will find out there are a lot of members that have huge garages, shops and barns with a lot of open space that might be able to help or walk you through replacing those beams.

keep on the lookout for some heavy duty hydraulic house jacks and large steel I beams and you will be on your way to the fix somewhere down the road with limited spending.

in case you couldn't tell by my first post i do like vises (vices) just a little bit. happy to hear you have a nice one and the name should be on the side if you care to look. the width of the closed jaws would give me (us) an idea of the model # if it isn't on the vice.

cheers

drivesitfar - I checked my vise and it says Fuller No1789 on it. Beyond using a vise I don't really know much about them - it's always done anything I've asked it to. For kicks I googled the name and didn't come up with anything. I have some other vises on the farm I might have a look and see what treasures they may be.. lol

Cheers

Nice place. I wasn't expecting that when I read your first post and was blown away by the photos. I have an old century barn that had horses that I am hoping to do something with soon. Welcome to the GJ. Great place to hang out.

Cinch: can you take a few pictures of your Fuller vise and maybe post them here and on the big Vises of Garage Journal thread? it's a monster thread if you want to see a few vises if you have a little time and would like to see a few. here's the link.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44782

of course it's not nice to say "I have a few other old vises laying around" without posting up a few pictures even if they are in the dirt.

cheers and glad to hear your vise it working good. if it hasn't been greased in a while it might be good to pull it apart to do so, but take a few pictures and post them first so maybe i can help with that because some are not easy to grease.

Hey Cinch01, welcome to the GJ. Always good to see another Ontarian on the forum!
What part of the province are you in? I'm just about to move to the area on the west side of Algonquin park. Any ware near there?

Steve
