How's this for a sub panel?

Finally going to add more juice in my attached garage. 200A Cutler-Hammer BR service in the basement, so I'm looking to stay with that model. I'll do surface mount as I just want to punch a hole in the rim joist & run the SER to the box - no drywall repair. See anything amiss with this choice?

Other than the crappy aluminum bus bar? Nope.

I would go with an Eaton CH but seeing that your main panel is a BR, i get why u want to use the same model.

Ive installed 2 cutler hammer br panels over the years, one of them was last week in a space limited situation where it was the only panel that would fit.
Both times Ive told myself never again,I guess I needed to do the 2nd one to remind me why I hated the 1st one so bad!:spit:
As much as I hate anything with the name ge in the name I think I hate those cheap *** br panels with their loose *** breakers and buss even worse.
Anybody who complains about sq d homeline stuff has apparently never installed a cutler hammer br panel!:spit:

BR is the modern Zinsco, something had to take Zinsco's place, to make the association even closer, they used to use Zinsco main breakers in some models.

Even as much as I hate, despise, loath, the BR line, the OP is correct in keeping them all the same.

I serviced a 43 year old GE panel, it was in fine shape?

Upon recommendation from several electricians I used a Square D panel in my garage.....why would anyone complain about them?

It doesn't seem inferior or superior to that old, crusty GE panel I serviced.

Why does it matter what brand the subpanel is? Buy the best quality / value you can find. If it's a totally separate panel I cant see any value in matching brands.

I am no electrician but apparently the general thinking everywhere IS; always try to match panels so you can run the same type of breakers. YMMV, keep in mind LOTS of homes are built with these BR panels in them and many of us don't have a choice on those builds so we research on the internet and we find logic as I posted above if were adding sub panels.

I would be interested in seeing any statistics of house fires related to brand and model of electrical panel. Some may be **** but they are all supposedly safe and UL listed.

It's not like people go around swapping breakers between panels for kicks.

I thinks it's just so a new owner and sell/buy inspector won't notice something odd and look deeper into a non-permitted electrical DIY job. :dunno:

For me, the cost difference isn't there to justify putting in a different brand. It's just simpler.

I thought Square D (not Homeline) panels that took QO breakers were compatible from a loooong time ago. Nope. The old (+20) panels might take the current QO single breakers but not the tandems. The old tandems have been out of production for over 10 years, but if you Google around you can find them.

Did the tandem breakers u tried have a CTL rejection clip?
