Re: Harbor Freight recalls Pittsburgh 6 Ton Jack Stands

I just don't trust any jack stand by themselves. I like to leave my floor jack in place whenever possible or I'll use stacked 2x6's or 2x8's as a back up.

Wood can fail too. I would recommend a steel reinforced concrete block to be poured underneath the vehicle any time it is in the air

I was planning to make a recall run to HF today as I have a torch that is recalled, and the jacks stands. But I don't see the recall listed on their sight.

I thought someone would get a kick out of it. To be honest the torch worked great for burning weeds, much less expensive and much more eco friendly then most herbicides.

The manager had no issue with swapping out my 61197 jack stands for another set of 6 ton jack stands w/ a different item number. The welds were still cold and still appear to have been done by a 6yo, but at least they have "less" of a chance of hurting people?

Re: Harbor Freight recalls Pittsburgh 6 Ton Jack Stands

Printed out HF 6 ton jack stand recall pdf and took my 61197 set into the local HF. The staff appreciated the pdf and I agreed to accept store credit. Problem was the 61197 was no longer in the system. They had to scan the 6 ton red replacement jack stands and credited me $49.99

Re: Harbor Freight recalls Pittsburgh 6 Ton Jack Stands

If you don't take the probably five seconds to confirm for yourself that the pawl is fully-engaged, before you load them, you don't have any-business crawling under a vehicle using these, or any jackstands in the first place. The HFT naysayers will be lining-up to slam HFT: crappy, killing tools! Pieces of sheet, etc. I'm not going to stop using my jackstands

The post above is brand boosterism gone rabid. I own some HF products, and most of it works well. But if HF or Snap-on or Craftsman sells a defective product that may cause injury or death, then they’re responsible.

Craftsman was once my favorite brand. Then they started selling shoddy products. I owned a set of Craftsman jack stands (like the guy above) that became the subject of a product liability lawsuit. Instead of posting a rant defending Craftsman, I threw out the jack stands and bought higher quality jack stands with a different brand. Problem solved.

Got a recall notice from HF on 3 ton jack stands

Dear Sir or Madam,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Harbor Freight Tools (“HFT”) has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain Pittsburgh Automotive 3 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands (models 61196 or 56371) and 6 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands (model 61197). Our records reflect that you purchased at least one of these pairs of Jack Stands.

What is the Condition?

For certain units of the Pittsburgh Automotive 3 Ton and 6 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands there is a potential, while under load and with a shift in weight, for the pawl to disengage from the extension lifting post, allowing the stand to drop suddenly. This condition could cause serious injury for people near or under a lifted vehicle, and/or damage to property. As a precautionary measure, we request that you discontinue use of the jack stand(s) identified below immediately.

Jack Stands included in this recall campaign include:

Item Number

Item Description

Sale Date Range

61196

Pittsburgh Automotive 3 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stand

January 2013 to March 2020

56371

Pittsburgh Automotive 3 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stand

March 2020 to April 2020

61197

Pittsburgh Automotive 6 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stand

June 2013 to March 2020

No other Item Numbers are involved in this recall. The 61196 and 61197 jack stands can be identified by checking the item number found on the yellow part of the label on the base of each jack stand.

The 56371 jack stands can be identified by checking the item number found on the label on the top of each jack stand.

What will Harbor Freight Tools do?

To all customers who participate in the Recall by returning their pairs of 3 Ton or 6 Ton Jack Stands item numbers 56371, 61196, and/or 61197, Harbor Freight Tools will provide a gift card equal to the retail price of the jack stands you originally purchased. Along with providing the gift card equal to the retail price of the jack stands you originally purchased, Harbor Freight Tools is providing a 20% one-time use coupon; see bottom of this notification. This coupon may be used toward the purchase of new jack stands, or toward the purchase of any other item in the store not subject to the coupon limitations. To use, customers must hand the coupon to the store cashier to scan.

What should you do?

Following the lifting of any applicable “Shelter At Home Orders”, please bring your 3 Ton and/or 6 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands, item numbers 56371, 61196, or 61197, to your local Harbor Freight Tools store to receive a Harbor Freight Tools gift card equal to the retail price of the jack stands you originally purchased (plus applicable tax). Whoa. I recommend buying jack stands with locking pins to help prevent the type of disaster described above. I really like the Chicago Pneumatic jack stands via Amazon--bought a pair in 3 ton ($50) and another pair in 6 ton ($80). Note the locking pin and plated feet.

Thanks for posting. Ill make sure to confirm with the manager at my local HF about the recall before I go hauling in 4 of the 3 ton and 2 6ton stands rambling about a recall lol. I was always a bit wary of the stands and tended to double them up (what would be the odds of 2 stands dropping from the same shift in weight?)

If you remember purchasing them around those time frames, suggest contacting a store manager and see if they will just replace them.

Should not be that big of deal.

Re: Got a recall notice from HF on 3 ton jack stands

I received that email also.

Back in 2016, I purchased a pair of 6 ton stands. I remember looking at the teeth and thinking how shallow the notches looked on them. They were certainly shallower than any other jack stands I had. I ended up returning them because they appeared unsafe to me. Imagine my surprise when I see an email 4 years later seeing that they were recalled.

I have a pair of the 3 ton jack stands. I always jack the vehicle up then lower onto jack stands then leave the jack a 1/4 inch or so under it. I don’t trust my life to a jack or jack stand but hopefully I can trust both of them!!!

My exact philosophy ! I often toss a wheel someplace tolerable as yet one more if I under there yanking around.
As for HF it’s Mighty Kind of em [emoji78]to not just give you a new improved set. Just doing a refund is pretty [emoji90] in my opinion. They are following the GM philosophy well🦨

Lots of irony in the hate, since the recall was initiated voluntarily, by Harbor Freight, over concerns of manufacturing tooling wear and apparently not by any NHTSA documented jack stand failures. :headscrat

After ongoing quality testing, inspection and assurance reviews of 6 Ton Heavy
Duty Steel Jack Stands manufactured by Jiaxing Golden Roc Tools Co., Ltd
(exported by Shanghai Shen Da Import and Export Co Ltd.), it was determined
that product quality had become inconsistent due to aging of the tooling
.

I am dumbfounded! Imagine that, a HF product with a failure and safety issue,

I wonder how many of those stands are sold under other labels? My Menards Tool Shop 6 ton stands are pretty much the same as the HF.

Important reminder:
When considering tools that; if they fail, could cause your death.....DON'T consider Harbor Freight tools!

I used one of their coil Spring compressors once, it was bending under the force of the spring. It was not the best of things to see.

I saw the link on the subject here....
https://www.thedrive.com/news/33572...-BoAjJAbG55bG4uDbiTZFlUNCKPXpdSFpdm4WxEoI3BNk

So I had to check mine for peace of mind, all four sets and I am so lucky I don't have any on the recall.
