in my experience stuff that big is worth scrap value--both for tools and for fasteners. anyone who needs stuff that big isn't buying it in the secondary market.

If I ran a shop or garage, especially one that specialized in heavy equipment or such, I'd make sure I searched the flea markets. Huge savings if you find the right thing, and its out there.

Totally disagree. How do you think million dollar companies make their money? Its not by spending it without thought.

I use large sockets such as those everyday, if you wanted to get rid of them stop by any industrial company in your area and i'd bet they'd be sold.

2-15/16" is for a 1-7/8" heavy nut, 3-1/8" is for a 2" heavy nut as well as the head on a 2" heavy bolt.

I'd have killed to have that 3-1/8" a few days ago - the 1" gun would have been far more pleasant to lug up the stairs than that 1½" spline drive.

I could have used it a couple of weeks ago on the piston nut inside of a hydraulic cylinder. We ended up having to track down and borrow a hammer wrench. If we couldn't have found one, I've was going to have to burn one out of some 3/4" or 1" plate. Talk about a pain.

I used a 3-1/8 yesterday. We had to change a loader cylinder out at work and thats the size for the pin/bolt.

You disagree with my experience? yours may be different, but mine is mine. And that's the reason I don't deal with large diameter fasteners any more.

I'd agree that there is a slightly more specific market for these size sockets. Most shops or companies provide stuff this big but if your into heavy equipment and do the work and tool buying yourself these will come in handy.

Obviously a big company isn't going to buy a "used" socket and probably won't scour eBay and craigslist looking for one, but plenty of farmer types might scoop these up at 50% of retail.

I sold some biggies on feebay, just listed each one separate, sold 2or 3 then cut a deal with a guy for the rest. I'm sure those goons at usps were not too happy though!

I recently went and helped a friend of a friend clean out a storage space he was renting. He was downsizing and I scored a complete Wright 1" drive set from 15/16 to 3 1/2. The 3 1/2 is an awesome conversation piece. also scored some Wright wrenches 1 5/16 to 2 3/4!!! All for the bargain price of...........free!!!

You said anyone buying sizes that big, doesnt buy in the secondary market. That is what I disagreed with. Sure they may not be buying a single socket, but used tools in greater quantities, they definately do.
