Hunter Ceiling Fan-light flickers, now no work

Our Hunter Fans, our son's and now ours, within one month, the lights started to flicker :shocking: when we turned them on and now none of the lights turn on.

The facts, I installed them when we had this home built.
I have installed many ceiling fans over the years and majority have been Hunter Fans with zero issues.
The fans are on separate circuits.
There are powered on/off with normal wall switches... we never used the actual light switch on the fan.
Bulbs are good and below max, fan still runs at all speeds, both are over 6 years old and have been on say 80% of the time.

I feel that it's the light switch in the fan (the one with the chain)... anyone else seen this? Or is it the ********* box inside the fan, I think it's a capacitor or resistor? There are two of them :headscrat

Not an electrician, so digital meters are not my forte. :)
Any guidance is accepted...or should I just look to replace the switch and or black box. If yes to the either, how can i determine one of those items are dead.

Thanks guys/gals!

So quiet.......anyways, I learned on FB, yep on FB, that those two black boxes are capacitors, I will bypass the one that is wired to the switch to see if it's truly the switch or capacitor.

You don't want to do that. The capacitor is there for a reason.

As you said above, its probably the pull chain switch. They go bad all the time and many home centers that sell Hunter fans have the Hunter replacement switch on the shelf.

If you want to confirm the bad switch, you can just bypass it to confirm all else is well.

The only way to figure out what is wrong is gonna be with a multimeter, unfortunately for u. I wouldnt remove the capaciors as they are needed to run the fan motor and lights dont need a capacitor to operate. Im guessing that the pull chain switch died, which happens all the time.

If you never use the pull chain, why not just take it out of the circuit and directly wire the lights?

Put a voltmeter on it. It will tell you what went bad. The only problem I have had with a ceiling fan was on one with remote control (not a Hunter).
The remote control was a black box inside the fixture. I removed the remote control black box, tossed it in the trash, and the fan and light still work perfectly years later.

Check for loose connections at the ceiling or in the light attachment pod. I have seen loose connections in both. PULL on the smaller wire at each connection at the ceiling as I have seen loose stranded wire(wire from fan) when connected to solid wire from house.

Reviving an old thread, I have the same problem. Replaced the pull chain and still no light. There are two black boxes inside my light assembly. Hunters website will sell the fixture, but its not the same and no mention if the black boxes come with it. Any suggestions?

About 10 years ago I had some Hunter fans with a black box thing inside. It would delay the light from coming on about 1/2 second or so. Some BS about energy conservation and such. I chopped those out before they caused a problem. Anyway, check to see if you've got something in the light circuit. The other things in there are for the fan.

Is the light switch a dimmer or just on and off? Older ceiling fans with dimmers don't vary the voltage to the bulb they cycle power on and off very fast to dim the incandescent bulb. Cfl and leds will not work in them.

You're having problems with Hunter fans because Hunter fans are **** and so is the warranty.

I put them in three rooms in my house. After several years all three went bad in various ways at various times, either the lights or the motors.

If there's a capacitor it would be for the fan motor. There should be another black box for the lights which is a wattage limiter. My guess is that either the limiter failed or the switch is bad. You can bypass the limiter to check if that is the problem, though technically it probably voids the UL listing of the fan.

If it's the switch, you can get one from Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, etc.
If the wattage limiter is bad and you want to replace it, you can get one from Amazon or directly from Hunter.

It was the little block with pink wires. Y59 A 120C. Found it mentioned elsewhere in the forum. Seems to be working fine without it.
The wires were packed and twisted so much that I thought the lights ran through one of the two black plastic blocks. I was wrong.
The more complicated things get, the more the internet helps figure out how to repair them.

check to see if the bulb either went bad or unscrewed. They do it all the time from the vibration. In fact I think fans use a special rough service bulb (or put an LED in unless you have a standard dimmer)
