I've picked up several used SK ratchets on Ebay for very reasonable prices, around $12-20 a pop. One 1/4" was missing the ball so I emailed SK. Their reply was no problem just send us the serial number. Three days later I had a rebuild kit that slid right in.

They refuse to honor the Husky warranty. Not sure if the hand tools still have the same warranty. I haven’t been back in years.

Who uses a 90t ratchet, and thinks, wow, “I need it to be TWICE AS FINE. That’ll help”?

A *****, that’s who this is marketed at. Someone with enough of a clue to know more teeth on a ratchet is better. While being stupid enough to not realize why more teeth is better, and can’t understand diminishing returns.

I guess there's some kind of race for more teeth. For the price they seemed interesting. It appears no one tried them yet, judging by the replies. Seeing some of the complaints I see scattered about on the web about the GW 90 tooth ratchets, this one got me thinking, sometimes less is more.

Sometimes I just end up buying things if there seems to be no consensus. Particularly low cost things that don't hurt me financially if they flop. I have a few ratchets that I never use that were mostly bought out of curiosity and don't fill any need.

I pretty often have that temptation...

Such is the temptation that yields blogs and YouTube channels (which isn't a bad thing sometimes)

So grumpy... ;)

The first time I saw the post, I wondered immediately "what are they doing to the pawls and teeth to make it tough enough?" Seems like the teeth would have to be damn small to allow for 144, and would have to be pretty damn hard to stand up to abuse.

If I'm missing what you're talking about, I'd be interested in hearing the rest of it.

I haven't tried them as I stay away from Husky tools in general. My understanding is that the 144 tooth action is a variation on the Gearwrench/SATA 120xp design. I'm not fond of the twin pawl gear design but, you may like it.

Don't buy tools based on the warranty. Buy them based on how they feel in your hand, and perform. You don't have much to lose at their price point so, get one and let us know how well you like it or grab the SATA version off of amazon in either 120 position or 72 tooth trim.

I still think any ratchet with over 60 teeth is overkill despite, owning many examples with higher tooth counts

The tooth race is getting a little silly. The alternating pawl design isn't winning any beauty contests either as evidenced by zero tool truck ratchets exploring it and Gearwrench updating the 84 tooth to 90. If the 120xp were that big of a winner they would have discontinued the 84 tooth.

Actually, Gearwrench is discontinuing the 84 tooth ratchet but, they're moving to the new 90 tooth platform.

However, i think the components for the new 90 tooth ratchets are coming from SATA and are only being assembled in Taiwan. The gear cover on the new Gearwrench ratchets is shaped identically to the SATA made gear cover. :dunno:

Sata and Gearwrench are both APEX. I’ve got a new 3/8 Sata and it’s almost identical to the Husky I own.

I wasn't clear. I meant they would have discontinued all single pawl designs in favor of alternating pawl (120xp) if they were the cat's meow. Instead they are upgrading single pawl to 90 teeth. I suspect this is because everyone in Taiwan is making 90 tooth gears now; may as well use them for economy of scale.

I say alternating pawl to distinguish it from dual pawl like Snap-on uses. I guess one could also call it stacked pawl? That might be better; Snap-on alternates too but with change of direction instead of each click.

Me too. In the case of this my HD was out of stock, and for some odd reason I couldn't order it to have it shipped to me. I passed, they might have done me a favor.

A set of 3 is only $50.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-144-Tooth-Ratchet-Set-3-Piece-H144RAT3PC/311856675

Lifetime "no questions asked" warranty. No receipt required.

I got them at $50... last month I think, Not any more... it's back to $69.99

It have very little end play, and pretty good quality / feel on the hand.
I say it is better than the old USA craftsman or other ratchets I have.
But at the end of the day, as long as it turns the bolt, I really don't care, might be great for tight awkward situations.

I got a set last month also and yes they are nice when room is limited.

With HDs abysmal customer service I wouldn’t touch them. But that’s just my opinion/experience.

I haven’t had any issues on warranty or returns at HD. This is highly dependent on the person working returns and their mood though. That being said, I haven’t done anything questionable like thrashing and misusing tools then warranty/return.

I took a look at the 144 tooth ratchets in store and thought they seemed like good value for the price (compared to Pittsburg or Icon). My 72 tooth Husky flex head has been great so far but I’m just a home gamer.

Price must vary by location. It is still $49.97 in north Idaho

OK, I just check with brickseek... just to compare.
The price at store if they have in stock is $49.97, If you have to order from homedepot.com it's listed as $69.97. Same for NY,CT zip code, and compared with one zip code from Idaho.

Home Depot is like Walmart and many other big box stores (shocker, right?) that dials in price points very precisely. With Walmart, you can travel to the next store 10 miles away, and the prices can swing wildly on non-advertised items.

When I lived in New York, the stores in the Jersey zone were blowing out the Ridgid jointers for less than half price. Across the river in New York, they were still full price. Just minutes away. Sigh.

I recently bought a shelf ginormous, bad-*** steel shelf that was listed at $249, but on sale at $199--but only in some zones. So I showed my phone to the local manager (Charlotte, North Carolina) area, and it showed $199, so they matched it. I think my cell phone, for whatever reason, often picks up an Atlanta location.

I actually agree with you about the marketing, but so what? If it is still a decent ratchet at a good price who cares about the marketing?

Spot on in my view as well, but I wouldn't bother trying to argue the implications of something someone wrote nearly a year ago, especially if that someone hasn't been active on the forum since the tail end of 2020. ;)

Damn, I didn't even catch that it was an old comment and I usually check for that. My bad I guess.

Lowes today.

Their sale had it at 5 bags for $10.

I did a double take when my bill was almost $50. It rang up at $9.48 a bag.
Apparently we have mulch that's 3x the price of the lesser 48.

I got it for $6 after showing the website price.

I have a gearwrench set that is fine tooth and a fairly thin head.
Only thing I hate is the lever to lock the flex head. Would rather it not exist

I don't need them, have any Husky tools or any 90+ tooth ratchets. But … what the heck, For $50 a set at HD, why not?
Overall, very nice. Not impressed with back-drag so I changed out the factory grease for some lighter synthetic grease and that helped., now they're much smoother with minimal back-drag/stiction. Actually the smoothest ratchets I have. I like. OK buy IMO.

Been using my 144 set a lot lately, especially the 3/8” drive, and they have been great. Surprisingly good for inexpensive ratchet set.
