Hello guys, I've been looking over several of threads regarding tool box's/roller cabinets.

I'm a bodyman, mechanic, race sprint cars and most of mine are old school Craftsman (the quality years) and have the newer Craftsman 6' Workbench with two more roller cabinets, but I'm actually looking for a home garage roller cabinet for my neighbor. He has six small carry types and felt sorry for him, so I talked to his wife about getting a roller.

There's two other threads about these and it looks like for the money, that Harbor Freight has been picked. He has a small single stall garage, so I though if I could get one with a built in workbench, it would suit him best. He's not a mechanic, bodyman etc, just a home guy, so a box with a lot of shallow drawers is not what he'll need. A mix of shallow to deep is needed.

This one is a Craftsman 6' Workbench and you can buy roller cabinets to go underneath, but by that time, he would have more invested than he would need, so I'm looking at the HF with a bench top.

The combination size of drawers looks great and has a bench top. Right now, the cost is $279, which sounds great, unless it's junk.

What do you think ?

Hun,...I see $279

"Husky 46 in. 9-Drawer Mobile Workbench with Solid Wood Top
Model # HOTC4609B1QBD

Store SKU # 763089
$279.00 / each"
-------------------

I did see the unit on Sam's site, but it has too many shallow drawers for what he needs. Just basic tools and some smaller power equipment for storage. The bench for smaller home improvement & repair.

Although, it's nice that it's 6ft long. And, the large cabinet in the middle for larger hand power tools.

I think I would then agree the Husky might be better. Still not something I would buy without kicking the figurative tires.

The pricing likely varies based on zip code. I put in a Brooklyn zip code, and it's not even available for purchase there. It's not available in my area either. When not signed in, it looks to base location on IP address.

IIRC, there were a few not to favorable reviews on here about that husky. :headscrat

I'm not sure if I completely agree on the not needing thin drawers comment. It seems, to me, also a DIYer that the thin drawers are more useful. Especially for all that small "stuff" that takes up space yet should not get piled in to a deep drawer just to get buried under more "stuff". You mention that he now has 6 carry size boxes. Usually you can't fit many bulky items into those so.... I think the HF44", would be better overall, but that's just my opinion. Then again it is ~$100 more and you would have to find a suitable wood top for it.

I have fondled the husky after I saw it in a mail ad. Yes I like to fondle tools boxes, don't judge  It just seemed super flimsy, especially the long drawer. You get what you pay for.

Standard file cabinets are cheap and great for the bulky heavy items. If he needs to really hammer on something I don't think any roller cab is going to hold up, short of a professional brand cabinet. Have you checked the used route? What is the budget for the project?

This box has been discussed here before a couple times

I have it and hate it. It is incredibly flimsy and the drawer slides are a joke

Spend the extra $100 and get the Harbor Freight 44". MUCH better box

The local HD is quite a ways from me, but I need to "fondle" it and the same at HF. Getting something that's so flimsy is not the way to go, especially since FriendOfYours is speaking with experience with the Husky. He doesn't need high dollar, but not a piece of **** either.

Generally ,....used roll aways are pretty expensive. I believe,...she thinking under $400.

Stuey- I've seen prices vary on Amazon also. Some have said if they reload the page, a different price comes up ? Crazy that company's do this ! and I'm not talking a few bucks, 30 is amazing.

I was also thinking, that if he wants to have a work top, he could just buy a thick board to lay on top of the roll away.

A fellow sprint car team bought a General at HF and it actually is very nice and semi heavy duty. I like it better than my newer,....Craftsman.

I just looked at this Homak at Northern for $430. Problem is adding shipping cost of $180
I'm sure over what she wants to spend.

zkling- you may be correct. If the Seville is a quality unit, it has many shallow's and,...it's 6' long to boot.

So, what about the HF General vs Sams Seville ?

For $400 and used wasn't an option  I would go with the HF44", then find a piece of wood or even better a used laminate counter top, cut to fit (find someone who is remodeling their kitchen, should be free) and a used 4D file cabinet on the side for bulky power tools. I am crazy about stretching my dollar and looked at every possible sub $500 tool storage option last year. I decided to go the used route, however it took time, patience and effort. IMHO the HF44" is by far the best brand new roll cab out today in the sub $400 range, again NEW.

I think the average home guy would probably use the top as more of an assembly and disassembly table than a hammering surface. Then again I guess it depends if the owner if more of a duct tape and hammer or socket and micrometer type of person :lol_hitti

When you go to kick the tires, see if it has the instruction book in one of the drawers... IIRC, the drawers have a 25 pound limit. Even the big ones.

Hi,

I got that same exact one for $249 from Home Depot in Kitchener, Ontario. It is very well made and the drawers don't feel flimsy at all. I threw the box away already so can't recall the weight capacity, but I've got a reciprocating saw, circular saw, portal hand saw (the kind with a small 4" cutting wheel) and a angle grinder thrown in the bottom drawer and it doesn't feel even close to capacity.

The top isn't too bad, I think it's made of bamboo .. very strong and looks very nice as well.

I couldn't get it to fit in my Ford Edge, as it was a few inches wider than the trunk but the manager (I didn't realize it was the manager at the time) said he would take the cost of the van rental off the purchase price so I could get it home! :) very cool.

I'm not a professional mechanic but I do have a very comprehensive set of tools and they fit very nicely into the drawers. Is this better than a snap-on box? Maybe not :dunno:. Is it very well built and perfect for me? Yes.

Seriously, for $249/$279 you can't go wrong.
