I was in Home Depot on Black Friday so thought I'd check out this combo they had advertised for $499. No interest in buying, just wanted to get an idea of the quality. I played with the drawers a little and gave it a good once over. I wasn't impressed. When I first saw it advertised, I thought, that looks like a pretty good price for a brand new toolbox. What I found was the sheet metal was too flimsy, too much play in the drawers, etc. I know it's geared towards the homeowner, but I wouldn't be comfortable loading it down with tools myself.

I was hoping the box was going to be better quality. :(

the metal did seem to be less of a gauge. id go with the HF over this one still, but the top storage is really nice. a lot of the cheaper boxes dont offer this. maybe a good selling point for this setup.

from what I've seen lately the husky and kobalt boxes are the cheapest quality around. HF seems a definite step up.

I find the Kobalt to be noticibly better that the Huskys. HF 44" and 56" are a step above both.

I'm really Confused on Why so many do not like this 52" Husky But Love Waterloo Tool Chests.

Guess what Waterloo makes it for them and they make the exact same model in there professional line that retails for a lot more money. I have been looking for a while now at all of these boxes and yes the HF 44" is very sturdy but it is only 44". The smaller drawer gives the allusion of a thinker metal. HF 56" feels the same as the Husky 52"

Can some one tell me for a home owner that does a lot of wrenching why this would be a bad box?

It has the best reviews of all the boxes. I like it because it matches my Craftsman older Grip Lock handles:confused:.

To who???

The HF 56" weighs 440 lbs has a working load of 3,458 lbs, versus the HD's 1,000 lb...

The HF 56" is much heavier gauge steel, and an all around higher quality box the the HD...

To each, his own...however, the HF 56" is a lot sturdier than the HD...

I own this box. I bought it about 2 months ago...
My previous boxes were two stacks of 26" Craftsman about 10 years old. These particular craftsman boxes did not have ball bearing slides but the construction was very solid with adequate metal thickness and much better than the current entry level craftsman boxes. So now you know what I have personal experience with.

This new 52" Husky is a great deal. I love mine. The box is beautiful. The drawers feel great. They do not flex in a disheartening way like so many people like to claim. The only thing I did was lube the ball bearing slides. I am not a professional mechanic. I do like to play with old cars, I do my own home repairs, I like tools and my garage.

I hope this helps.

I have the previous style 52" (or 56", don't remember) Husky box for about 5yrs and it's good enough for home use. Certainly don't stack up to my friends SO boxes but it's sturdy enough for all home garage.

This box probably doesn't work too well in an industrial environment among all workers bc abuse is expected. For a single person use and not frequent, I believe it will work extremely well in many residential garage.

To me looks like some nice prices on the boxes from Husky. I myself have 2 HF 44s and love them. I havnt seen them in person to tell any quality difference but my thought if it fits your needs and priced within your budget then pull the trigger on it.

Are you SURE about that? To my knowledge, some Husky boxes are made by Waterloo, but not all.

The Waterloo boxes will have an ID badge in the upper right drawer and it will have Waterloo's phone number on the label. If you don't see that badge, or can't find it on the tool box itself, it's likely NOT a Waterloo made box. Additionally the Craftsman stuff made by Waterloo is the same way.

You're looking for this if it's a Waterloo

In my opinion I'd say Husky< Kobalt < Harbor Freight

For the record I own the Husky 26" and the HF 44", so I have some basis for this comparison.

Buy the box you like best and that makes sense for your needs. I have not seen the Husky box first hand, but I am certain what ever the weight rating is for the drawers it will function fine within those parameters - if it works for you, than don't worry about comparisions to other manufaturer's.

IMHO - It is not necessary (but if it does flick your wick to have a high end box-that's ok too) to have a Professinal grade box for a DIY'er garage. Take the money you save and go buy a new toy to work on.

I agree. I am looking for two things. Built well enough to last for a home owner and Match the looks of my older craftsman box with grip latch. This one looks exactly the same and has the grip latch.

HD tells me they are selling allot of the new 26 " double for $298.oo and the 52". the lower one with the wood top as well. They are starting to carry them all in stock.
