good afternoon,

i own a husky air compressor for over 3 years. it is an oil less compressor. the other day while i was undercoating my Buick it stopped making air and started making more noise instead. well, i think i finally found the problem. the piston ring has jumped its grove on the piston.

does anybody know who sells a refurbish kit or tune-up kit or just the rings?

i looked on the Husky site but its not the best.

thanks,
Yaril

I think I heard somewhere that Husky was manufactured by Campbell Hausfield? Don't quote me on that though. Home Depot carries Husky air compressors around here. Maybe the local store could point you in the right direction...if they carry them in your neck of the woods.

ill talk to someone at the local HD.

i thought of poking it back on the groove, but didnt want to cause more damage and figured if there was a "tune-up" kit this would be a great time to do it.

thanks.

Husky is a rebadged Campbell Hausfeld. Shoudln't be that hard to find a replacement --

These problems always seem to happen on a weekend, when you're knee deep in a project.

HD wasnt much of a help. they gave me a list of small engine repair shops and said that i would have to take it to one of them on their list. thanks for the info, i am searching Campbell Hausfeld.

it always seems to happen that way. as is the case with my craftsman floor jack.

ok, i took the cylinder and head off the compressor. turns out the piston ring isnt really a typical ring. its more of a dish thats sandwiched on the piston. the piston itself is not deep at all. the dish is cracked (therefore not sealing). the cylinder wall is in turn damaged. so i am going to take it tomorrow to one of the small engine repair shops to see how much $$$ it will take to fix this little motor.

Those sealing disks don't last forever. They couldn't use a conventional piston and ring set-up in those compressors because the piston does not pivot on the rod, and has to tilt back and forth in the bore with every revolution.
You can get new parts from Campbell Hausfeld, the company who makes the Husky units (CHPower.com). At this point in the compressor's life, think hard before spending more than it is worth on repair parts. Does it use a universal motor with brushes? How does the rod bearing feel? I guess what I am saying is, unless it is a higher-end unit, then you will probably be better off buying a new compressor.
If you would like a repair estimate, take it to one of the places listed at CHPower.com as their factory authorized service centers. Most of them are either compressor/pump repair places or lawnmower shops.

thanks major, i found a local repair shop. took them my piston and cylinder and they have the replacement parts.

they said $78.
found it on the chpower site for $35 +tax & shipping = $50 approx.

guess $28 bucks to have it know is worth it? really didnt need it right away. i just feel horrible going back and saying thanks but i found it cheaper.

what would you do?

If they offer any reasonable length warranty on both parts and labor, thats a big plus for having them do the work, but at minimum I would give them a second chance at your business and just tell them you found the parts for $35 and plan to put them in yourself. Maybe they will compromise on price or offer to sell you the parts directly without shipping.

OTOH this is why a lot of shops have a $20 to $40 "inspection" fee that can be applied to the repair.

I'd make sure you are talking the same part, that it isn't just a sealing disc vs some kind of rebuild kit with more parts, but otherwise I wouldn't give it a second thought and order the cheaper one online. I would also do a google search with the part number to see if it isn't available even cheaper.

thanks, funny cause the first thing i do with anything is Google it. thats how i found a cheaper price. i searched the part number on the box... WL211000SJ then i searched the part number on the CH website. it shows up as a repair kit. so it has to be the same thing, it comes in a box with piston, sealing disc and cylinder. thing is that once the sealing disc goes bad and messes up the cylinder and therefore will need replacing too.

total was $44 w/ shipping and tax.

thanks for all the help everyone.

If they are not going to do the work, then I would thank them kindly and take the compressor home. If the compressor would cost more than $150 to replace, then I'd repair the one you have. Unless you need a larger unit anyway.

yeah, i actually took them only the piston and cylinder, half the work is done. i had no way to get the compressor over there. so as soon as the part gets here i will install it and let you guys know. a $40 fix or a $300 new compressor, seems like the right move to me too. thanks again.
